Hi openDias testers,

You've received this email because you've either agreed to test openDias, or, you've commented/contributed on an openDias pre-release version in the past. Apologies if this mail reaches you incorrectly, do let me know and I'll ensure these do not make their way to you again. Still with me? Thanks for your continued support. Feedback from users is essential to keep openDias a current and useful application.

So, to business. I've just tagged a beta version of the 0.9 series of opendDias, and are looking for some good people to have a go and provide feedback before it goes live.

We've added some great stuff this last cycle. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Here are some highlights:

 * Auto detect similar documents, offer to 'tag' and 'title' new docs for you.
 * Privilege assignment by username and password.
 * Added Dutch translations.
 * Can now scan in colour.
 * Detail page now has a 'print now' button (for scans and jpeg imports).
 * Increased the max number of scanning pages to 30 (from 10).
 * Deprecated location based privilege assignments.
 * Improve scanning performance.
 * Application and install, now honours GNU autotools --prefix option.
 * Tests no longer need special permissions to run.
 * Web application is now session aware.
 * Implemented bind vars for result returning SQL statements.
 * Stubbed out many external libs for testing (performance).
 * Localisation is now much easier.
 * Cleaned up homepage.

Visit the download page on the official website and give it a try. Everything is explained from there (you're getting the full user experience).

At present, I do not recommend using this version on a production system, but, performing an upgrade on a current system (copy of) is something I'd really like to hear about.

Otherwise, have fun, I hope you're really going to enjoy the new features.

Thanks

Hi Wayne,

Today I did a testdrive on the new beta-version of openDIAS. First it is very nice to see the application automatically appearing in Dutch. I will post you some updates in the translations later on because I found some typos.

The installation of openDIAS went smooth on Ubuntu Server 12.04, with all the updates applied and firing up the service went OK also. Signing in however was kind of a pain, using Lynx I could not manage it, probably my fault but still. Signing in form a remote machine worked but the interface is not quite clear on this. It took me a while before I understood that I had to type something over the menu-option user and password. I'am used to click the sign-in or logon button and than be presented with the fields username and password.

After being logged in I made an ordinary users which went fine but also I found it not very intuitive to first click on the admin-username and than find the options to do user-management. Maybe a separate menu-option for user-management is more intuitive for the users and admin of openDIAS. Since openDIAS is focussing on home-users is has to be very simple and easy to understand the workings.

Scanning gave me problems, the interface got stuck on the message 'initializing'  but this probably has something to do with my scanner and the crappy support form HPLip for wich you filed a ticket.

Importing a PDF-document went fine but filling in the document-details gave me an error on the document-date. The calendar shows nicely but when I select a date (13 march 2013) the field gets filled with the value jj/03/13, which results in an error message. Something goes wrong in the year-value. The OCR-field is not filled but the log file tells me that the ' text extracted from PDF'.

Importing an ODF-document went fine and also the OCR-field was filled with the correct text.

A nice to have would be a drop-down list of the available Tags and some kind of tag-management, done by the admin.

So far for the first round of testing. Later this week I will look again and work on improving the Dutch translations.

Kind regards and a good weekend,

Piet

Hi Piet,
Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated.

________
Updates to translations:

OK. I've added some additional phrases since the original translation, I'll email over the new phrases if that's OK.
________
Use of Lynx:

The app is extremely JavaScript rich. I don't think that Lynx would they be able to run the application functionality properly.
________
None obvious login:

I recognise this and steps are being made to make this clearer.
________
Hidden admin option:

Wpb: OK. I'll look into options and let you know.
________
Scanning error:

I'd like to see the log for this if possible.
________
Error updating date:

This is a bit bad and indicates several problems.
I would like to see the serve log for this attempt also. I've tried to replicate with no joy, could you let me know what localisation settings you have on both the server and client machine?
________
OCR from PDF not working

I'll check this out.

________
Tag management:

Tags are managed using the app itself. Select a tag by typing the beginning letters, a list of available tags is shown in a drop down for selection.
If this is a new tag, continue writing and hit enter at the end, the new tag will be added to the available tag list and to your doc.
When you delete a tag from a document, the server checks to see if any other dogs are using that tag. If none the tag is deleted from both the document and the list of available tags.
________

Cheers

Hi Wayne,

I'am still available to do some extra translation-work for openDIAS so you can mail me the localization files. Further I like to enhance my earlier work because some translations are not quite nice in their context and I found some typos.

For the date error I checked the locale on both the server and the client. I used the command locale to retrieve the settings. My server, where openDIAS, is running has locale en_US.UTF-8 and my clients have locale nl_NL.UTF-8. openDIAS runs in Dutch on my client. In Dutch IT-environments it is quite common to have the servers installed in English, for ease in support, documentation and Googling for solutions and have workstations installed in Dutch for use-ability for the average user. I can imagine that people form the UK or US always use the same locale;-)

For some logging I increased the loglevel to 4 and than performed a login, and tried to perform a scan using all the default settings. openDIAS seems to hang after hitting the scan button and the message 'initializing' is on the screen. After a while I do hear the scanner making sounds but openDIAS doesn't recover from the initializing message.

After this I tried to import a bill from my dentist, which was already scanned to PDF. The bill has no fancy layout and only some text in Arial. openDIAS shows that there is a similar document, wich is correct because I used this document earlier. This document doesn't produce any OCR-text. Now I tried to modify the document properties. Setting the document date goes wrong, but typing over de jj, for year results in a saved document. The weird this her is that the date doesn't get stored in the database because the document list shows no date and after retrieving this document also no date is shown.

For the tags you are completely right and this works fine but my idea was to kind of lock-down the choices so you don't end up with the categories ' Bill' and 'Invoice'  for the same kind of documents.

So far for this evening. I mail you the openDIAS logfile through GMail. I look forward to the files for translation and trust soon there will be a good working new version of openDIAS.

Kind regards,
Piet

Hi openDias testers,

Thanks to all who have given the 0.9.1 beta a go, and for all the support & constructive feedback that's been received.

A number of improvements, fixes and tweaks have been made in the past two and a half weeks, so a new version 0.9.3 has been cut!

Feel free to upgrade your testing environments and post any feedback in advance of the expected final release date of Thu 25/April.

Cheers.
