Hi,

My name is Ian; I'm based in London and part of the OpenDesk team.
I'm looking forward to answering some of the questions and enquiries on this forum.

Currently I'm looking after a number of 'get it made' orders in various countries and am following up with the local partner makers to make sure they are delivering something really special to customers in their local area.

Also I'm in touch with new makers around the world to increase the number of places we can deliver OpenDesks to. Most of these are not yet on the platform as we're checking quality of materials, finishing etc. Usually we run one or more test products as well.
If you're curious about developments in your area or you have some suggestions for local makers that may make great partners, I'd really like to hear from you.

My background is in business and in mechanical engineering - the old fashioned sort; no web coding involved :)

Hi everyone,

It's great sharing this user group!

This is Alfonso Spina, Italian architect just moved to London, with a good knowledge in design & construction of wooden building plus some experience in pieces of furniture collaborative-making (bed, table, cabinet, mezzanine).

Local & affordable CNC capability is a real bomb for the furniture sector and we are really close to that (Handibot, e.g.). I really believe in the value of open source (r)evolutionary model addressing physical things. (I am also team-member of HiLite, Open Hardware research group focusing on energy, light and transmission).

Hoping to contribute to the project in the near future! (and touching the furniture at the Hub)

hi,
My name is Pedro and I'm from São Paulo - Brazil.

I own a cnc shop called pedroterralab.com
My site is mostly in Portuguese, but there is a page called Open Source furniture I'm sure you will all understand.

I truly believe that open source is the way to go and I want to help in any way I can the growth of this community.

Some friends and I construct the cnc that we use in the shop. is a mechmate measuring 3 x 2 meters, so we can cut big pieces.

I graduated from the visual arts, but my main goal was to become a skipper of a sailboat. I do not know exactly how I ended up working with cnc and digital fabrication, but anyway, I love what I do.

A couple of months ago, four colleagues from the masters teamed up and created SMD lab, a creative-maker space in Barcelona, where we offer CAD consulting Services, Training and CNC cutting

One of our most remarkable works was to design and build our own CNC milling machine, which is in constant evolution :)

Here is SMD lab profile on fabhub  ( still work in progress)
Where you can take a look at the construction process of our CNC

Let's try to create a big community of makers from worldwide!

Hello,

My name is Tarik and I'm a Brazilian copywriter (architecture drop-out and design enthusiast). I live in Goiania (nearly 200km from Brasilia, the capital of Brazil).

I stumbled upon Open Desk while googling open-source design projects and loved it. I have a bit of an experience with wood crafting (only enough to be aware of how much I actualy can't do) and have wandered around furniture design while in architecture school. I always sketch some furnitures, but mostly as a doodling exercise more than anything else.

Anyway, I'm open to contribute however I can to make OpenDesk even bigger.

Hope we can figure something out.

cheers, mates.

Looking forward to future discussions.

My partner Brian is a one-time architect and artist come web developer, I am a statistician and woodworking hobbyist. We are interested in adding concepts to the OpenDesk project as we build the business, but your desks and chairs, for starters, seem like a great fit for the Boston market.

How can we learn more about getting involved?

G'day,

Peter here in Brisbane, Australia.

I'm a licensed builder, carpenter by trade. I'm slowly developing sustainable prefab buildings, completed a few already from weekend cabins to a 4 bedroom house that I took 700 odd kilometres out west.
Started CAD drafting my own projects years ago and changed over to Revit a year or so ago.
Recently bought 5 new CNC routers off a chap who imported them from China, he had a spot of bad luck and had to sell them.
So I've been having fun upgrading them to Mach3 and sorting out all their electrical faults. Ready to start cutting now and hoping to sell a couple of machines.
I have plans for some curved buildings, hence the interest in CNC.
Love to make furniture and itching to try out some OpenDesk designs.
I hope to contribute to the community here and help designers get their ideas made.

My name is Jeffrey Matthias and I've been dabbling with open source furniture design for about 5 years. I am an industrial designer turned software engineer, working for a company called SendGrid. I run a small company, furnlab, on the side.

The two designs that I've had out for a long time can be found here: http://www.jeffreymatthias.com/downloadable-design/ If ip addresses from my downloads are to be believed, my work is popular in Russia. :)

I spent a large percentage of my time in design school focusing on designing for CNC technology. I also worked for a Housefish, another CNC based furniture company. I got worn out trying to bring open source to furniture and ended up working in software, where the culture is already strong. When you have a family to support, one can only be an evangelist until the money runs out.

Here is the current version of my oldest design. It originally came about in 2001... WAY before I knew what a CNC machine was.

Howdy Ya'll,

Found out about opendesk after reading about it in the HN newsletter. I currently develop touch plugins for graphic designers (thimbleup.com) and come from a background in hardware/software/robotics. Been curious for years about how to design a desk similar to the Lean, but want to figure out a way to make it adjustable in height (stand/sit) while trying to adhere to the flatpack / CNC-able philosophy of opendesk.

The Lean DESK looks appealing for apartment-dwellers trying to convert their dining area into a partial office -- one-side for dining, one side for working.

Hello!

Just a casual maker here!  Your site struck a chord with me, as I love this style of making and I've even tried my hand at it.  I think my flat pack, no screws/other hardware desk is great and I'd love to hear feedback on it!

Here is the finished product.  Left arrow will show various other picture, including the 3D design and in-progress shots.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamthemeche/6090394138/in/pool-lifehacker-workspace-showandtell/

Currently, I have the file on Google Sketchup, and I'm working to add all the interlocking notches on the design file so it can be converted as need be to make it V-carve compatible.

What do y'all think?

Hello,

My name is Zach Thomas. I am an industrial designer in North Carolina.

I do most of my creative projects within a design collaborative called Relative Design. We design and sell original products but also provide 3d printing and CNC routing services to our local community.

I think this OpenDesk is a brilliant idea. As the DIY/Maker movement continues to grow, it seems like an excellent way to curate and promote excellent designs. The growing network of CNC factories that support this idea is equally as impressive. We hope to become a part of that network.

Like many makers, we have built several 3d printers and have just recently built our own 4' x 8' CNC Router. We are using these tools to develop a line of flat pack office furniture that we think is appropriate for this market. We would love to offer our CNC services to help distribute OpenDesk items in our area and hope to submit a few original designs as well.

Hi,

I am a furniture and fine product designer based in France on the border with Geneva Switzerland. I have been designing bespoke furniture and fitted units for a wide range of private clients in the area. However, I am developing further to create my own product lines; furniture, tableware and lighting.

I have been using a network of local craftspeople to realize my furniture, and as a designer maker I make certain pieces and prototypes myself. Recently I have been using a Greek company to fabricate the majority of my furniture, the quality is very good and they are competitively priced. They have a wide range of large scale CNC equipment and it could be possible that they become a trusted manufacturer.

I am interested in creating designs for OpenDesk and sourcing for particular things to be made for me, naturally using the OpenDesk products as well where appropriate. I would be very interested in submitting designs as soon as you are ready to receive them.

I am currently developing an online shop and have aspirations to sell products from various sources through a few interior design stores that are interested in promoting Ralpine Design and its services/products.

Hello world!

This is Kyle from Hong Kong, works in the advertising and window film industry for a while, we just bought a ESKO Kongsberg XN cutting table with a 3Kw milling head and so excited to come across this page and group.
I study design in University and really like the idea of sharing design as I believe every design should be affordable by people.

I enjoy watching how things being cut on my machine and very keen on large format printing.

I'm new to CNC but have been keep an eye on the technology for a while. We just cut a Cafe table on my machine and it works fine. But I don't know what's the small holes for on the plan, anyone have a clue? I have been talking with lan for a few days but I know he's probably too busy for the orders around the world.

I hope I can give some design when I fully understand how my machine behave, I still have no idea how can my machine make bevel edge. Anyway, probably too long for introduction, nice to meet you all, guys!

Cheers,
Kyle

I'm helping set up the Footscray Maker Lab, and am pushing forward our first major group project at http://map.footscraymakerlab.com. Our group is a bit different to most maker labs, as a lot of the people interested fall outside the 'traditional' maker/hacker demographic of 18-24 geek; we've attracted trained architects, designers and futurists in the largest numbers so far.

We're hoping to be able to CNC these open designs for the public at some point - for now we're looking for a local mill that will make a couple of desks for us.

Love this project, looking forward to seeing how it grows, and as I learn more Industrial Design, contributing to it.

Hey,

My name is laurier. I stumbled here after seeing a maker at a belgian expo. I was intrigued and thought i would look and see whats it all about.

i'm a mechanical designer by day and tinkerer by night:). I love design and making things myself so i am always teaching myself new things. For the moment i am designing a screen riser for my office and was wondering if this would interest you guys and how this works.

The screen riser is made of layers of plywood and is made for a two screen desk but could be changed to single screen to. It has a paper organiser, smartphone holder and crap holders:)
The design could even dynamically be made based on the width of the screens and the distance you sit from them. Because i sit straight in from of one screen and the 2nd is at an angle.

So i will take a look around and see if people are interested in a design like this or something else;)

Hi everyone,

Im a portrait photographer by trade originally from London and currently based in Hong Kong. I am always interesting venturing into new exciting projects including and visual arts design.

I love the idea of OpenDesk and I hope to trying out some of the design and in building them. My knowledge in furniture is very limited (close to 0%) but I have a had long history of design and advertising along with my photography, along with many creative people I enjoy a good design. I downloaded a few designs I really like to starting building for my home and office in Hong Kong, one problem I am finding is that I am unable to find a professional maker to help me create the cut the template for me to start building. Being close to China and Hong Kong is well known for its manufacturing I am fairly sure there must be a few professional makers that can help me.

Hopefully this forum can share some tips but also a list of makers I can approach to help me in Hong Kong.

Nice to meet you all and lets see where this takes us.

My name is Scott Bryson and I'm a jack of all trades so I've done some product designs in surfboards, truck canopies and furniture. The previous decade I worked with a friend as the back office for her architecture & design, so I got fairly immersed in that field. I currently run a related Facebook page on architecture: Architecture International Style

I'm wondering where the profit incentive is for designers if plans are given away, but on the other hand there must be something going on here, I like what I see.

Below are photographs of my "Danger Bed" which got that name as I didn't round off the sharp corners, also it assembles through gravity to hold it together, there could be various ways to secure it better but it is very stable as long as a heavy person doesn't trampoline on the edge. It also allows for some under bed storage, and I envision various additions such as drawers, doors or cubbyholes. It does flat-pack so has the potential to manufacture and distribute.

Essentially it is 5' X 6' and the bottom rails about 1' to make the most of 4' X 8' plywood. It can be made from two sheets of plywood if the short ends are joined with leftover scrap, alternately in mass production the end pieces could be one-piece. I did use self tapping screws to join those end pieces and fasten the 4 leftover triangles which keep the top pieces aligned in the frame. Essentially the cat's out of the bag now and one could easily draft this up, I will get around to it eventually or perhaps a maker would like to go in on some prototypes, I would at least like to get a copyright credit on end results, perhaps some licensing scheme later but I will have to see how you work it here, I'm not too worried. Probably a good idea to round those corners a little!

Danger Bed Photos

There is currently a vogue for hollow wooden surfboards made much in the style of sailboats or model airplanes, I would be interested in exploring those possibilities eventually.

Cheers,

Scott Bryson

Hi, my name is Ying Jie Hua, currently an undergraduate at UBC in Vancouver. I am really interested in your furniture designing concept. My creativity is unparalleled and most importantly I crave for innovation, I crave to push out unseen designs. I have done a few projects in the past and always have managed to accomplish them with tools restrictions. Laser cutting simply allows more versatility and freedom, which opens up a whole new range of possible designs. I would like to know how to get started, what 3D CAD tool to use and what design you are exactly looking for.

Brad Jensen

James,

Currently the goal is to:
1) Laser cut a 1/6 size model
2) Build a full bed (King Sized) for my personal use and as proof of concept.
3) Design a series of beds for standard sizes.

I would love to make parameterized beds, but that is currently beyond my skill set. Ideally, there should be the possibility to adjust the length and width of the bed for different sized mattresses as well as to adjust the height of the legs and for the height of the mattress as well as for differing thicknesses of wood.

Can you direct me to where I might be able to learn how to do that?  I currently work in SketchUp (love the new VCarve plugin!) but also have access to the AutoDesk suite.
