You can find the answer in the OpenDCP FAQs.

http://code.google.com/p/opendcp/wiki/FAQ

You are trying to view an XYZ color spaced image on an RGB monitor…
and that isn't going to look right. Your images are fine.

Wow. Right there in plain sight, ha! Luckily I've got a friend who's a projectionist and we can test this thing out. Thanks!

fraunhofer's "easyDCP" player (the free trial version plays 15secs) gives pretty good results for a quick check up. it has emulated XYZ to RGB transform and tries to mime cinema gamma as well. if it looks scarily wrong there it probably is. it will not replace a check-up in the cinema of course but if you drag in a jp2000 still image it will transform to RGB adn gamma 2.2 so that you can get a feeling of it. there is also doremi's "cineplayer" which plays back only 15 secs as well but from anywhere you want (whereas easyDCP player only shows you the first 15secs) - the color transform is not nearly as accurate as easyDCP's one though.

I use both EasyDCP Player+ for the 15 second check and Stereoscopic player with does XYZ transform (not quite as accurate as EasyDCP but if very affordable ($20) and plays the whole files. But these are just checks before I reserve time in a theater.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

yeah, the stereoscopic guys are good friends of mine, but unfortunately their software is still only available on windows and no plans for a mac port in the near future. but apart from that: +1

I read that rgb -> xyz conversion that adobe does is not 100% DCI compliant: http://dcinemaforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=305.15
Is that still the case or did adobe fix their LUT for this particular color conversion?
