I've had a request to see if it's feasible to build a playback server for use in a very small venue (25 to 50 seats). Cost is the major factor here. It would need to play encrypted and unencrypted DCPs being the largest catch.

I've googled but not come across anyone who has attempted this. Surely someone has.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

The main problem here is encrypted content. Physical security is a must upon specs, so "secure silicon" seems to be not available to any open source software (FIPS certification cost a lot, I think).

I've seen cinemas getting licensed bluray and DVD content for such auditoriums after special request, but I'm not sure it's common worldwide, not only in Russia.

I'm currently looking forward to GDC releasing new IMB, allowing man to assemble his own content server (should be cheaper). Looks like an option for you, if DCP support is a must.

Yuri,

Thanks for the info. Do you what model# the new GDC will have? I don’t see anything like that on their website.

I've got that information and then development and support request for such content server from Russian GDC distributor. I'll ask for the model #, but it seems, that some event is taking place in Vegas currently, so any answer will be delayed at least for two weeks.

CinemaCon (formely Show West) is coming up in Vegas. As for the Open
Source/DIY Playback server... it would probably only be possible with
a "certified" media block. However, doing this for a single customer
would not be overly feasible. The R&D costs would exceed the price of
buying the equipment to begin with. It's hard to open source anything
with hardware.

Doremi is using binary blob for their Dolphin driver, so everything is OK (more correct to say, that not everything is OK, because interface between binary blob and kernel must be open source, but is not).

But by using a linux distribution, they don't need to redistribute the source code of it , after modified it ? I think at doremi server, which have a linux onboard

If you went with playback of on unencrypted DCPs and dropped support for KDMs - the items needed would be:

1 - Operating System: Linux
2 - DCP playback software supporting InterOp, SMTPE, MXF stereo, 3.1 and 5.1 audio via compatible software interface
3 - PC with media board supporting 2K JPEG2000 MXF with probably SDI Out
4 - Audio Interface with line level outs - XLR probably.
5 - Projector with SDI input supporting 2K resolution

Correct?

If you don't need DCI compliance and/or the need to play major studio
content, then sure, what you are talking is an E-Cinema type server.

Looks like correct, but why unencrypted DCP (12 bit color source?)?

Looking at auditorium, I'll go for h.264 (10bit) support, using
vdpau/vaapi decoder (+mplayer).

I've forgotten, there is a German company offering mediablocks to
develop own software, certified ones as far as I remember. I have even
contacted them, cannot remember the price, but it was high enough. You
can check this way at least, because everything else is not that
difficult to develop.

The reason for DCP would be that the venue is not wanting to deal with the headaches of computer playback of various files or encoding their own or dealing with blu-ray playback reliability.

I had no issues using mplayer with libavcodec playing every content I tried. Even Doremi released 1U Debian based HD player. At least maybe it's worth to try and/or check the info about e-cinema, as suggested by Terrence.
