Hello group,
I've created a DCP but when I checked the film on a projector (and also on Quvis DCP Player) about five minutes in I start to get flash frames constantly appearing from a section of the film much later on. The audio remains "in sync" from the start but these frames flash on top of the running picture from this point on until the end of the DCP.

I've checked that the original TIFFs and JPEG2000s are all in order and they are. I've also tried making a DCP just of the section where the problem begins and it doesn't occur when it's an excerpt but does when I use the whole picture MXF file. I've also tried remaking the picture MXF file but it happens with that too.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated! I'm up against a deadline today and need to figure this out.

Thanks,
Phil

You can the classic file numbering problem. You need more padding in your file names so the sequence is read correct order. When padding is short, some apps will read correct sequence, some won’t.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

As in never having numbers without a 0 on the left? That is a typical trouble around sorting as text vs sorting as number. Both methods are supported by many libraries but not all programs or code lets you chose the method to use. It'd be interesting to see the source in asdcp and/or opendcp see if it can be toggled, and do some QA tests. Probably making sure there's always padding to the left would be simpler.

Yes, always have at least a couple of zeros on left. Common problem in post – places like Fotokem, IMAX etc. have specific file naming guides with set amounts of padding .

Yes, you should always have a leading zero. OpenDCP is pretty flexible
with filenames and will attempt to detect sequences as best as
possible. However, when dealing with sequences it always best practice
to pad, regardless of what the application is capable of.

Thanks guys! I've been tearing my hair out for hours... I didn't know everyone had replied on here.
Will try renumbering and let you know how it goes.

Do all of the TIFF files have the same number of digits at the ends of their names? Differing numbers of digits has caused this problem for me. If so, use a renaming program to correct them.

Eureka! Thanks everyone, renumbering the files worked. I basically added two zeros to the start of the numbering so that even the file frame of the sequence had zeros. I've just rerendered the MXF and checked it in Quvis Player. All is working.

Thanks again for your help.

No worries - first mistake I made on my first feature length DCP years ago.
