A friend - Ben Webb - at YRS this week has put together this application
with the GMPTE data.

It's a "live" map of Manchester Buses - where they "should" be if
they're running on time etc.

http://dev.dfey.org/busmap/

Hover over a ping and it displays the bus number...

It's been put together in a day or so thus its a bit rough around the
edges in places but does anyone have any initial thoughts?

Thoughts?

Short email? I'm trying to stick to this - http://five.sentenc.es/

If I express an opinion in this email, then it'll be my own.

This is brilliant. When I heard about the GMPTE data being opened this was the first thing I visualised so it's great to see it done!

Well done to all the Young ReWired State-ers, they've created some really great apps off some really great ideas. I spent a short time with them on Tuesday and their enthusiasm and ideas and intelligence made me excited about their work and the potential of Open Data and mashing up stuff again.

Good work! Ben

This is pretty cool, its right about the bus I'm on!

Ideas:
One cool thing might be to color the tokens depending on the bus companies color, orange for stagecoach, blue for magic bus etc.
Is it possible to add geolocation for smartphones?  Im pretty sure android and the iphone cqn do it anyway.

Sorry about typos, sending from phone.

Yeah Tim, this is exactly what I hoped someone would build with the data!

Brilliant. Are you happy for me to tweet out a link to it tomorrow?

Martin.

Hi,

Ben here, the creator of the map.
Thought you might be interested in seeing
http://xn--gce.com/yrs/livebus.json - which is the json file of
estimated bus positions generated every few seconds on my server -
which is then used by the map. I'm sure other people could take this
position data and put it to good use.

Hi Ben,

Really like what you have done with the data - would you be interested
in collaborating on a NESTA application to build upon it further as a
maintainable commercial application, combined with some of my own
ideas on late buses?

Hi Ben,

Is it possible to add the ability to click on a bus and for the route it
takes to be highlighted?

and if that is possible how about being able to indicate the distance
between any two points and/or the whole route?

There is a small grants pot available to bid into for projects that
promote/encourage sustainable transport. Some of the potential
applications for this data easily fit in to the criteria.

Problem is it is limited to the city of Manchester, however as a pilot
to test the possibilities...

I will be popping along to the fairs thing later.

There are lots of different things that I can imagine would make the
map more useful. Although I plan to have a crack at a few of them
myself, in the meantime anyone else can have a go, since I've released
the source code - http://xn--gce.com/buses/README.html

Also, the bus apps managed to make it into the MEN -

Hi Ben,

I appreciate that overlaying  a line showing the route will be a bit tricky, how about highlighting all the stops on a particular route with coloured dots or similar?

I will follow the link and have a looks to see if I can do anything, although my only experience is limited to entering lines of BASIC from magazines on an MSX machine in the early 80's, messing with an action reply (hex editor) on an amiga and editing registry entries and config files in windows.

Hi Ben,

Your map appears to be broken, Is your JSON file still working as it
is returning nothing, which in turn has broken my AR channel ;)

Ah, out of memory due to logs. Fixed for now. Had a look at the AR
channel now, good stuff.
