Quick update: The Open Government tour began in Toronto earlier this month and will make its stop in Vancouver on August 26th.  I have been hearing good things about the tour so thought you may be interested to bring a buddy along to check it out.

To learn more about the Vancouver event and to register: https://vancouveropengov.eventbrite.ca

Richard is also stopping in Victoria on August 25th but I can’t find the local event page.  If someone knows the URL to register, please share.

Subject: The Open Government Tour - Can you help?

Hi

Richard Pietro (http://ca.linkedin.com/in/richardpietro) is looking for someone, City Champion, to help with the Victoria and/or Vancouver stop of his Open Government tour (www.opengovtour.org).

(FYI – Victoria is not yet listed on the schedule as we suggested to Richard to include it in his tour.  We see activities and good efforts are also happening in Victoria, it will be good to raise awareness even more in this important city.   Richard liked the idea and it would fit in very well with the tour schedule.  He just need the City Champion’s help to make it happen.)

Here is some quick info. on the tour /local event:

·         Purpose of the tour: To raise awareness of Open Government/Open Data (OG/OD) and to change the traditional view of civic engagement

o   Get media curious so they will write about the event before/during/after the event to help raise awareness, especially if one event can feed to the next

·         City Champion:  to help find a venue, spread the word and to help connect with local OG/OD advocates

o   Can be any individual(s) or group such as school, citizen, local businesses/entrepreneur…etc

·         How: Riding a motorcycle to visit 17 cities in 3 months

·         Format: To host a 2-3 hours event at each of the 17 cities where Richard will interview some key individuals about their point of views on Open Government/Open Data.

o   Content will be entry level and relevant to local residents.

o   Event will be recorded and published, hopefully as an open data set

·         Time: ETA to Vancouver at end of August (first event will be in Toronto on July 2nd)

·         Event cost/expense: None.  Admission is free.  No food/drink will be available at the event.  (He has a budget to cover his own expenses)

·         Venue requirement:

o   fits 50-100 people, some tables and chairs

o   good WIFI connection

o   AV (some microphones and projector)

If you want more information, read this article by William Wolfe-Wylie (http://o.canada.com/technology/internet/its-time-to-make-civic-engagement-sexy-again).   Sounds like it will be a very interesting and entertaining event.

Richard is cc: in this email in case there is any question (not sure if he needs to join the group before he can reply though).  In any case, he email address is listed and he can follow up with the individuals who have questions.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in helping out, please let Richard knows.
