Dear mentors,

My name is Seung Chan Kwon, and I am currently a second-year graduate student at Soongsil University, studying Python and computer vision. I am very interested in the GSoC 2025 project with OpenCV: "IDEA: QR/Barcode/ArUco Detector."

My current research focuses on tiny object detection, where the goal is to detect objects as small as 6 pixels in a 1024-pixel image. This has given me extensive experience in detecting abnormal or extremely small patterns, which I believe will be highly valuable for this project. In addition, as a graduate student, I am confident in handling the mathematical aspects that may arise during the project.

I have a few questions regarding this project:

  1. While it would be ideal to balance both performance and inference speed, I would like to know which one is prioritized in this project.
  2. From what I understand, existing detection models are already capable of detecting QR codes, barcodes, and ArUco markers fairly well. If this project aims to improve on that, will the focus be on handling extreme scenarios — for example, when visibility is poor due to lighting conditions, or when the camera lens is partially obscured by water?

Through my research in computer vision, I have frequently used OpenCV and am very eager to contribute to this project. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what I should prepare to better participate.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
