Basic Info on this IP

Hi, I have downloaded the code from the open cores. I have a few basic questions on my mind that i would like to ask. I am doing my university project on it like performing lint check and CDC analysis. So my question is do i need to know the functionality of it and the working of each and every pins.

I would say yes. All the time, for this project and every other project that you will be doing in your career. The only way to make things work is to undersatnd them perfectly.
