Hi,

I'm the developer of the Pilot's Charts aviation chart viewer for iPhone and iPad. My app and the charts have always been free. I'm thinking of open sourcing the app because I'm kind of tired of working on it and I'd like to see it grow. This means that I want the right community of motivated quality developers. If you might like to collaborate please let me know. My app is on the iTunes store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pilots-chart-viewer/id470762253?mt=8

Regards,

Eric Marsh

Impressive. Cool to see you want to open source this. How do you
interface with maps, WMS?

Eric,
Indeed, this would be fabulous!

As you most probably know, we're lacking an iOS viewer, but we do have
an Android viewer ourselves. So this collaboration would be extremely
beneficial, both in terms of viewers (iOS & Android), and in terms of
map content (US & Europe)!

Eric,
thank you for considering Open Aviation Maps as a possible 'host' for
the continuation of your project.

I saw your messages on facebook, but I figured e-mail is a better
communication channel.

regarding 'preparing' your US / FAA charts to be used by Open Aviation
Maps as well: you described that you create a 4-zoom level set of the
FAA charts that you process. this we could use in our application
directly, if the maps can be cut up into 'web-map-style' tiles. that is,
tiles of 256x256 pixels which follow the map-tile convention.

regarding open sourcing your app: I think this would be a wonderful
idea. OTOH, if your expectation is that a strong developer base would
take over and maintain your app, then I have to disappoint you. here at
OAM we're also having grave shortages of manpower :(

but still, maybe your act of open sourcing your code could bring in more
enthusiasm, and someone would actually come forward to nurture it.
