I've been thinking. There are many places around the web where there
are OpenAir files lying around. The problem is just that they all are
incomplete, use ad-hoc naming, missing heights etc. I've been thinking
to make a website where people can submit their aviation data files,
and then get feedback on what errors there are in the files, and how
to fix them. Then, when a file validates, there can be a submit button
that lets you send it to us. This way we may could get people to weed
out all the small bugs that are in different openair files?
What do you think?

it's a nice idea, but still it needs expert knowledge

I was thinking about re-using a web-based OSM editor, like iD: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/ID - and to tweak it so that one could directly edit aviation data through it.

and then of course providing OpenAir import capabilities as well, but maybe the 'fixing' could be done in iD, instead of the original file & some output of the import facility

what do you think?

Hi there Akos,

That sounds like a great idea. I'd love to help contribute airspace for South Africa, and a nice interface like the OSM one would help a lot.

Cheers,
Abri

Seems like a great idea. I didn't know about OpenAir (is this the best link you've found?), so I'm glad you mentioned it. I've wanted to gather data that would help with adding Canada to Avare, and it seems like there are many sources. Are you considering setting up a fast server that would have a description and some examples like on the link above? If so, maybe we could start encouraging various sources to use it or at least follow the format and help verify items as you've outlined.

I like this idea. Are you willing to set up and run the server?

A great start could be made by someone who could create a script to harvest and convert data such as what I've found in the Places To Fly section of COPA for Canada, and the right column info box on Wikipedia pages like this I've found for airports in Canada & Mexico. Then volunteers could easily edit to correct and add any missing data. I might be able to create a word processor script to do it, but maybe there are faster and more elegant/powerful tools available?
