Hi all,

I finally completed the new version of Eye&Telescope with <OAL>
support. Download is here: http://www.oculum.de/oculum/download/eundt-update31.zip

To install, unzip the setup package and launch setup.exe. When
prompted for the installation directory, please select the directory
E&T resides in.

E&T 3.1 requires admin privileges on Vista and Windows 7. But you do
not need to set any compatibility options or modes.

The SQM <--> fst conversion stuff ("Schaefer correlation") is to be
found in "Tools.Convert sky brightness...". Here you can enter a
couple of SQM / fst pairs and have E&T compute the fstOffset. The
value is displayed on this dialog and once again in the observer's
data (command: "User data.Observer..."). And of course, it's conveyed
into our XMLs upon export.

For those of you who already know E&T, don't miss to check out the new
color settings dialog for the star maps. And try "View.Similar to
print".

The automatic backup on shutdown was improved, too. Now not only the
most essential Userdata.mdb file is written to the backup directory,
but it is zipped together with all planning documents located in/below
the documents root directory. The archive has a timestamp and so you
have a history of everything. This can be very important if (for
whatever reason) the very last Userdata.mdb is corrupt. Just restore
the latest one that did well.

If you run E&T from a USB thumb drive, during backup the logo screen
of the app is displayed again, reminding you to not remove the device
until all data is written.

The new version will be officially released in the next days.

Last but not least: the international version of Eye&Telescope is
about to be published world wide by Cambridge University Press in
(spring?) 2010. Then E&T can be purchased easily in countries outside
Central Europe.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,

Congratulations on the new release, and I hope the OAL2.0 support is
well received by users!

PS - Glad you sorted out Windows UAC. Isn't that fun? Not!

Hi all,

today E&T 3.1 was officially released. The download link for the
update remains valid, but I made some changes in the package. So
please "update the update" to stay in sync with my latest
developments.

I'm going to take care of some other things in the next months, so
I'll retract a little bit from our forefront. We should think of
providing a documentation / SDK in the next year.

Another point that is missing, but an important part of our original
concept: a converter to transform text based object data to OAL
format. Such a converter could be used to prepare downloaded data
(from sources like Vizier) for import into deepskylog.org or our
desktop apps. I'm pretty sure that it takes more effort to work out a
good, flexible and clear design for such a gizmo than it takes to
actually implement it.

On January 9, 2010 the German "Computers in Astronomy" group will
(once again) meet at Hagen public observatory. While I'm sad that we
will not all have the chance to come to this place, it would be a
great pleasure to meet you there! The agenda is not explicitly
dedicated to OAL, but we should find enough time to share some ideas
and -- important! -- to celebrate what we have achieved!

Cheers,
Tom
