I am trying to build a virtual glove . For that I need to detect the
movement of fingers and orientation of the palm .
For the palm , I am using an accelerometer .
For detecting the movement of individual fingers , I was thinking of
using flex sensors
http://www.rhydolabz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=887

but the issue is its high cost .
Does anybody know any other sensor by which i can detect the bending
of a finger ?

Is sensor necessary ?

I think you can do it for zero cost using Matlab and Webcam.

If you wish to go open source then opt for OpenCV (http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/) and Webcam.

Conductive rubber. Get some from online stores
OR
Coat a piece of rubber with graphite carbon.

@chetan Actually i had done a project last year in which we used OpenCv to detect colors from a web cam feed and control Vlc player with the movement of the hand (we had put bright colored bands on our fingers) . I found that its extremely taxing on the machine . It slows down other processes quite a bit . But that could have been poor programming too ;)
We want to use sensors and an external micro controller to handle majority of the work this time (we are using arduino for this project).
@J T Dsouza Thanks !

Any other suggestions are most welcome !
Cheers !

processing video is a very intensive task. Even if you had a dsp and optimsed code.

rubberbands coated with  graphite lubricant soaked in a solvent. You will have to use a good quality rubberband that wont degrade rapidly in the slovent. You could also use graphite impregnated cloth. Imprgnate by soaking or coating the cloth with graphite lubricant thinned with solvent.
