Hello OpenAlex Users,
We've been ecstatic to observe an exponential rise in usage of OpenAlex over the past 6 months. We now serve 18M API calls a day and 100k unique users of the User Interface per month! We are truly humbled by this growth and thank you all for your roles in making this happen.

This increased usage also adds strain on our servers and so we're working on some backend changes that will help us serve common requests more efficiently. These changes will help us continue to serve our ever-growing user base more cost effectively without compromising service. You'll notice some small things that help, like changing the default text search on the UI from fulltext --> title & abstract (though, of course, you can still search fulltext). You'll also notice some bigger changes, like a new feature coming soon that allows you to export only (but all of) the data you need faster and more efficiently than paginating through API calls for large datasets.

The January 29, 2025 snapshot will be our last public monthly snapshot, as we move to quarterly updates (a new public snapshot every three months). The UI and API will remain up to date. And Premium subscribers will still be able to access monthly snapshots as well as the premium API filters that help them keep their snapshots up-to-date hourly. If you are not a premium subscriber and need the data snapshot updated monthly, contact my colleague Steve Gruber (st...@ourresearch.org).

Thanks again for all your support,
kyle
