Hi everyone,

OpenAlex covers productions without a Crossref DOI: no DOI at all, DOI Datacite.

OpenAlex provides information on open access status, just like Unpaywall does. So it seems that OpenAlex provides data that goes beyond the scope of Unpaywall (limited to DOI crossref).

Is OpenAlex intended to replace Unpaywall by providing an equivalent service on a wider perimeter ?

I am curious to read your vision on the subject.

Hi Eric,

Great question! The short answer is that yes, we envision that Unpaywall will eventually merge into OpenAlex. But doing so is not a high priority.

You're right that OpenAlex is of much broader scope. It includes records from MAG. Each record has more metadata, and the API makes searching and discovering data much easier. OpenAlex is pulling in a lot of open access data from Unpaywall so what you get in Unpaywall with regards to status, locations, etc should be the same in OpenAlex.

One clarification is that OpenAlex and Unpaywall do not include Datacite DOIs (at the moment). We want to add more DOI registrars in the future and that's on the roadmap. Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot Casey, that is clear.

For Datacite DOI, some are in OpenAlex (example https://api.openalex.org/works?filter=doi:10.48550/arXiv.2110.01958 ) whereas not in Unpaywall (https://api.oadoi.org/v2/10.48550/arxiv.2110.01958?email=unpa...@impactstory.org), but I guess that in that case, the Datacite DOI information comes from arXiv metadata (and not from Datacite harvesting).

Thanks again for the great tools you guys are building !

Eric
