openalexR - issue with output of institutions

Hello,

openalexR --> not pulling all institutions with country filter. This should be a fairly simple API call to openalex but it is not doing what I expect. It is only pulling 206 institutions, missing most of the universities I would expect to see.

There’s an issue with country codes for the institutions, which are null for many organizations that should have one. A subset of those, that do have a ROR (and strangely also have a country in their geo object) is here: https://api.openalex.org/institutions?filter=country_code:null,ror:!null

 

There’s no way to filter for Canadian institutions there, unfortunately, but you could maybe add name filters and see if the universities you are missing are not there because the country code is null.

 

We’ve submitted an issue a while ago but they’re probably still working on it at OpenAlex.

I can try some work around. I had done this call about a month ago and it worked fine so I thought I was going crazy!

I'll post if I find a solution that might help others.

Hi All,

I thought I'd send an update to let you all know that the country filter does actually work. It is the "type" filter for entity = "institution" that is the bug. The type = 'education' is particularly affected because many institutions have been mis-categorized as "funder".

I let Kyle from OpenAlex know and he said they are aware of the issue and is working on it.
