Hi all,
There seems to be a decline in the coverage of affiliation metadata in OpenAlex, particularly with regard to journal articles published by Elsevier since 2024. Only around 6% of Elsevier articles published in 2025 have affiliation metadata in Walden.
To better understand this and help fixing it, I wrote a long-form issue description comparing the OpenAlex snapshot from September 2025 with the initial Walden snapshot, analysing more than 13 million journal articles.

The post investigated articles in journals included in transformative agreements to obtain a representative sample of major commercial publishers. In the post, I also share publisher-specific statistics on affiliation metadata coverage comparing both snapshots. The article-level data is publicly available via BigQuery.
