Hello,

we (glider pilots) use cupx files (cup-files + images zipped together) in our onboard navigation computer to see outlining fields. Of course we don't plan to outland, that's why we want to check the field (including images) while in the air.

A fried asked me over the weekend if we can create a database of airports (in our vicinity), containing similar information, like an aerial image of the airport, showing the traffic patterns, maybe areas to avoid and so on.

So my question: would It be possible to upload/maintain these images inside openaip or is the image-list created for other purposes? We would then create a cupx generator using the openaip rest api. Maybe it is even an option to have that cupx generate inside openaip.

Cheers
Marcus

Hi Markus,

yes, it is absolutely possible to maintain this kind of information on openaip - that is what it was designed for. But please note that we currently do not support outlanding fields due to various reasons. So, contributions to airports/airfields are very much appreciated but please do not add outlanding fields. There are already some excellent databases for this that provide a lot of details, are compatible with modern flight computers and are well maintained. Adding another "competitor" would be very counter-productive.
We currently support CUP but not CUPX. This indeed would be a nice addition to the list of available export formats. I'll take a look asap and see how much effort it is to implement this. I guess it should be fairly simple to add the additional logic to the current CUP exporter.

Let me know if you need more help - for direct communication, you can also use our Slack channel.

Cheers,

Stephan

if useful for the discussion, I use OpenAIP for which I contribute for Italian AIP, and I add a layer for weather forecast and conditions, and a layer for outlanding-off-landings including CUP and CUPX format +  I let the client to add and consult in real time the personal file saved on client PC.

For further questions don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi,

I added the CUPX export format to openaip. Let me know if there are any issues with the new format.

Cheers,

Stephan

Hello Stefan,

no, there is no plan to add outlanding fields.

The idea is to maintain only photos with annotations (traffic pattern) to help structure an unplanned landing at an airfield (which happens when gliding ;) ). I already use OpenAIP cup files, so it would be nice to use a cupx version instead containing those images.

Can you explain how the cupx export works, I normally go to the "Data exports" section. There I can filter for cupx, but I don't see German airports, with that filter applied.

Cheers

Hi Marcus,

unfortunately it seems that the production environment is having trouble exporting sets with a lot of images. This worked in staging so I hope it is "only" related to a timeout issue. I'll check that asap and report back.

Cheers,

Stephan

CUPX files are now correctly exported and available for germany. Let me know if it works for you. Cannot verify with actual hardware unfortunately.
