The usenet group called sci.math is at the mercy of cranks, vandals,
spammers, simpletons, theomaniacs, you name it. So I started this room
with the same aims as that room, but with the ability to delete the
worse-than-useless postings. Feel free however. Anything to do with
mathematics is okay with me. Speculation, flaming, swearing -- it's
all good as long as it has something to do with the knock-em-down drag-
em-out world of mathematics. Be pedantic if you wish, but you do so at
your own risk. This is not an academic venue. Your delicate
sensibilities, if you have any, are your problem.

About the rules for posting: it sounds as though you intend them to be
lenient, while cutting out the worst of the crackpots, and the strange
campaigns of defamation that sometimes sweep through sci.math. That's
good. In some groups, there is a more or less explicit rule against
self-advertisement; for instance, one may be flamed for announcing
that one's book or paper is about to appear. If you make such a rule,
I hope you will allow some exceptions.

Thanks. The group got five new hatchlings in its first day. A good
start ;)

That's the idea, yes.

Yes, calling attention to a paper that one has written, is okay in
general. And I expect a member will sometimes need to write something
up in TeX, or use some diagrams, for which this ASCII platform is
insufficient. A link to the offsite document would be natural then.
I'll look into the possibility of members uploading files straight to
this group (as the owner can already do).

New members can now post without waiting for moderation. The uploaded
file AboutGroup.jpg shows the whole current configuration of the
group.

Thanks for taking the initiative, Larry. I would be honored if you'd
count
me in.
