Hi, you can send me the log.

Also, sometimes you can get a better debug log by running thee disk
imager manually. Press alt-ctrl-f1, and run these commands

export DISPLAY=:0
umount -l /mnt
sudo open1to1-imager.py --eraseallmydataplease

then press alt-ctrl-f7. You should see a new instance of the imager.
Once you get an error, press alt-ctrl-f1 again to see the output.

Tried the commands, /mnt isn't mounted and the last command just hangs, going to tty7 I just get a black screen.

The command should hang. It may not be tty7. Hit alt-left or right
until X comes up.

The image does boot. I remember seeing something about unmounting /mnt failing. The imager finished with and exit status of 1. Would the umount be enough to cause a failed exit status?

Yeah that fixed the crash that happens when your run some updates. I also had to remove jupiter but that is the equivalent of eeepc-tray for many more laptop models. Lastly I think ureadahead is what is causing the black screen. When I uninstalled jupiter I noticed that it said ureadahead would be re profiled on next reboot. That boot went fast. The following reboot ureadahead took a about 13 seconds which is roughly the length of my black screen now. I'm getting closer, but so is my deadline.

After I removed the virtualboc utils I noticed the Vboxguest service is still starting. It's an entry under startup services. Disabling that got me down to 45seconds to login screen, but I still have a 15 second black screen. This is turning into my " Moby Dick."

Removed the individuals indicator applets and added indicator-applet-complete back saved a few seconds on boot. Wifi bug still present though... I'm current;y defraging the FS. I did read that e4defrag can change inode priorities and  cluster files together but I haven't been able to figure that one out yet.

Problem with the imager? To read the imager log go to tty1 (or any number other then 8) and go to /var/log/imager.log. I copy it to the /images directory so I can view it outside the imager environment.

I ran a defrag with e4defrag but boot time stands stiff at 43seconds including the black screen of doom.

The indicator applet wifi bug was a showstopper in my opinion which is why I disabled it....it is not native to open1to1, it affected all flavors of ubuntu

As for the wireless networks thing. What happens is when you click on the network amanger applet in the indicator applet no networks are shown until you restart networking either by disabling networking or using the disable wireless button on the laptop. It's quite the pain and I wouldn't use it till it's fixed. 

As for the boot issues it seems someone dropped the ball with e4defrag and ureadahead and didn't allow for packing all those inodes into the beginning of the disk. e2defrag has dump2inodes.py but there is no option to do this in 12.04. Sounds like a regression to me, guessing Ubuntu is given up on fast boot times on HDD's since SSD's are so fast. Kind of a cart before the horse issue.

e4rat might eb an option but it requires removal of ureadahead and I think it breaks Plymouth... and I don't have the time to test everything. I'll see if I can resolve the Wifi applet issue but since I did a bunch of changes it seems to be working now...? Anyone know if there is a bug open on this issue?

I can verify that the current imaging tool that is posted has a flaw and is not imaging properly.  I tried making the usb stick using "Startup Disk Creator" in Ubuntu from the boot.iso file downloaded from the images folder on open1to1.msln.net....and it failed at the end with an error message.  Despite the failure, the imager worked up to a point and again...failed at the end.  The old boot.iso file (boot-old.iso in the images folder on the open1to1.msln.net site)...should work fine, but you may be missing some of the configuration features.  I am kicking this over to Brendan...hopefully he'll ping me soon so we can get this fixed...I'm assuming it's something simple.

I downloaded the new imager too. I got the same error message at the end of the install, i.e. image failed to install. If you boot the imaged computer, the image seems to work even though the error message says it failed.

 I appreciate the work you are doing on this project. I used it last year and it was awesome.

Brendan, this is the error I get when trying to make a USB stick using the StartUp Disk Creator in Ubuntu (with boot.iso of course)

Could not move syslinux files in "/media/1950-A8A7": [Errno 39] Directory not empty. Maybe "/tmp/tmpFiw2Ii" is not an Ubuntu image?

For some reason it's not "flushing"?  Not sure, but hope you do
