Sorry for the late notice, but tonight the OMSI Science Pub series is
having a talk "The Changing Face of Animation" at the Bagdad Pub. It
is from 7-9pm, but the doors open at 5pm (they say "Come early for
food, drink, and to get a seat!). The talk is about the use of 3D
printers in the movie Coraline.

Here's the description:

Coraline is the first stop-motion animated feature to be conceived and
photographed in stereoscopic 3D. LAIKA, the animation studio behind
the film, became the first company to use 3D printing technology to
create thousands of replacement faces, props, and in-camera visual
effects. Three cutting-edge 3D printing systems from Objet Geometries
were used in the development and production of this critically
acclaimed film. Since the completion of Coraline, the creative team at
LAIKA has continued to push the boundaries of 3D printing technology
and is exploring new ways to integrate this new technology into the
animation industry. From early character designs to highly detailed
computer sculpts and artistically engineered puppets, 3D printers are
breaking out into artistically dominated fields.

At this Science Pub, you’ll get a chance to learn more about the
intricacies of Coraline, including the opportunity to find out about
the details of 3D printers and how they are being used in the creation
of cutting-edge animation. Some puppets from the movie will also make
an appearance.

Brian McLean is Facial Structure Supervisor at LAIKA. He is a
traditionally trained sculptor in clay, plaster, and wood and has
worked as a commercial sculptor creating themed environments and large-
scale character sculpts for Warner Brothers and Disney. He was a model
shop supervisor at California College of the Arts and taught model
making techniques and introduced 3D printing technology to students
and was instrumental in the development of using 3D printer technology
in the facial animation on Coraline.

Any chance of a recording of this? There are *lots* of folks I know
who would have been there if they didn't have other commitments,
including me! ;-)

Unfortunately, I was also one of the people who had another commitment
last night. You would need to contact OMSI to see if they recorded
the event. If so, let us know!

I contacted OMSI to see if they had a recording of the Science Pub
talk. Unfortunately, no, but it looks like they would love some help
to get them recorded in the future. If someone can help out, contact
them directly. Here is their response:

Unfortunately no, the Science Pubs aren't video recorded. (I
sometimes
have it together enough to audio record them, but alas, there were
technical difficulties on Monday night so I didn't get it.) I would
deeply love to be able to have them video/audio recorded and archived
online somewhere, but it's simply a matter of time and resources,
(both
people and money). As in, I have none of them. I don't suppose you
have any suggestions or ideas for a student group at PSU who might
want
to take it on as a project?

I've heard about the TechShop...very cool!

Cheers,
Amanda

I've "got the gear" and know the "people" ...

if only "someone" had some _money_...

I'm not sure why this would take money. If you already have a camera,
that's pretty much all you need. No need for multiple cameras, as it
is just a speaker. Although I suppose it would be nice to have one
camera for the speaker, and another for the screen. But I've recorded
talks with just one camera, and it worked ok.

the relation between money and time ...

_I_ can only "guarantee" the people if there's money to pay for their
time, I can see if they want to volunteer on their own accord (make
them aware of the opportunity) but I can't speak on their behalf ... I
can't guarantee that they can afford the time

... the cost of work

If there were people would would work for free --- and really knew what they were doing! --- I might be able to find some gear; paying gigs _do_ come first when you're trying to float a business.

then there's the risk of an untrained operator.

I've got a couple "handicams" at techshop, but we'd need to set up some kind of check-in / check-out process to make sure that they are being used "responsibly".

any interested parties?
