I tried the windows version of this the other day hoping it might be useful
for scanning computers with no internet link by creating an up to date
version on a stick and taking it to the computers. Sadly it is quite frankly
rubbish. Not only does it take an age to update, but throws errors all over
the place when its trying to get the files. thenwhen you have got them it
seems to give false positives for lots of programs like registry checkers
and passwords storers and all sorts and takes an age to do a scan and often
locks up completely.

hi

Clamav itself isn't a bad antivirus program. I use it to scan windows
and linux machines and it usually comes up clean, but will catch
something bad if it does get onto a computer. Clamwin though I think
uses either an older version of clamav or a forked version and yeah it's
never been great. If you're determined to use windows I'd recommend
using either avast if it's still accessible or MSE, which you can
download for windows 7 and lower but comes with windows 10. If you're
willing to try linux you can boot a distro like sonar or vinux from a
flash drive, install clamav, run something like sudo freshclam to update
it, then scan the windows drive. It's not graphical, you'd need to run
it from a command line but it's an option.

Thanks

The whole point of this was to create a stand alone scanner on a stick tu
use on machines away from a web link, so most of your suggestions are not
valid in this case. I am certailnly not using linux as that would add even
more complexity to an already fraught situation.

Some people claim that the UNIX learning curve is steep, but at least you
only have to climb it once.

Well things read but seem very sluggish to me. I suspect also errors are not
trapped very well in clamwin and hence it can lock up without any kind of
error other than this program has stopped responding.

Could it be clamwin puts logs in /var/log/clamwin/ subdirectory? If
not by default can you with a little configuration make that happen?
I think for clamwin and clamav, some security geeks could really help
out here by writing some batch files and shell scripts they'd be proud
to use on systems with these programs to keep those systems really
secure. At least in clamav, there's lots of command line options and
getting the right ones in a batch file can enhance what is found and
reported in report files for your later analysis.
Many are called, few are chosen. Fewer still get to do the choosing.

I've not given up on that program its far too buggy and slow tobe used I
fancy.so what else is there in windows that could fit the bill?
