Hello,

My name is Nigel Delaney and I am currently a graduate student at Harvard University.  As part of my thesis research I spent a lot of time developing a software system to develop and run protocols using robotic laboratory instruments and sensors.

I spent a fair bit of time on it, and am thinking others may have some interest in it, as it appears to be the type of open source software that your group is interested in, I thought it might be useful to touch base.

However, I gathered a lot of stuff on the website looked like spam, so wasn’t sure if anyone was still active in the group.  Is the group still active?

Best wishes,

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
We met a few months back. I work for Caliper.
This group is active. The are impediments to crossing a threshold to "very" active, but the individuals remain interested and attentive and we have breakout sessions at industry meetings such as LRIG, ALA and SBS.
I also anticipate the a few near term events will inject renewed activity. One of the main blocks is a lack of a code base, but there are rumors  and anticipation around this - someone may be opening up a previously commercial product soon. Once that happens things should get interesting.

My advice would be to stick around for a few months!

Cheers,
Mikew

Hi Mike!

Yes I certainly do remember you, that is how I found out about the group!

As for the lack of a code base, that is really exactly what I spent all those years writing, and I think it is very flexible and well developed.  However, I really only have caliper’s software to compare to, and I don’t know if the other companies tend to offer better products.  Is there a company that seems very likely to release its code base sometime soon?  Any upcoming meetings in the Cambridge area?

Anyway, thanks for the quick response, and I hope all is well, it looks like the nice weather may return soon!

Best wishes,

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I am chomping at the bit to tell you what I've seen shaping up but it will have to wait.
Let me just say that yes the weather is improving. And, yes, your coding efforts may land you in a nice vantage point inside an active, high(ish) profile open source project.

Can't wait to have more to say.

Hi Nigel,

I know, I'm really annoyed about the spams too.
Anyways, welcome to this group and sound like you're just the kind of
person this group want to attract, so don't give up:-)

cheers,
robp.

Dear all,

The group is still active.  Several of us from Novartis and Amgen have been working behind the scenes on laying some of the ground work for this effort including:

1.) Surveying vendors to assess if their is enough support for an open source lab automation effort
2.) Consulting legal advice on how to shield the organization from liability if system failure occurs and warranties are voided
3.) identifying the best structure for incorporation etc.

We too are annoyed with the SPAM.  Unfortunately there is no good way around this.  We have been evaluating the NING website tools to replace the Google group which would remove the SPAM. We wanted to solidify the new name for the group before creating the NING site.  Therefore if you have suggestions for the group name please submit them soon.

Thanks for your patience and participation.  Please stay tuned.

Regards,
Bill Goode

Hi Nigel,

I'd certainly be interested in your software, especially if it's open
source (and as you say, flexible and well developed). We have a lot of
lab automation here at Aberystwyth currently running code from both
Caliper and PAA. Have you made it available or are you just at the stage
of considering opening it?
