Volunteer Fire Crews and Software Cost

A December 15 New York Times article was about the $$$$ aspect of software costs on VFD's, and how some software companies throw the screws to vulnerable operations.

(FYI, the article didn't mention CAD software, which I always thought was central to operation, much less our particular version of it.)

I wonder if any of you have tales you can share re the cost of commercial CAD.  And any suggestions for us, here?
