A few days ago one of Americas most revered education institutes
contacted me asking for details on how they could assist me with open-
sapi.

This is very exciting as it is the first organisation to actively
pursue the use of open-sapi in their projects. A requirement for them
was to move from SAPI 4 voices to the new SAPI 5.3 voice that has been
in use in Windows since the release of Vista.

So open-sapi did not quite meet their needs as it runs SAPI 5.1, but
still looked promising for helping to automate their backend text to
speech production.

So I started this seriously last night and now (the day after) have
Microsoft Anna chattering away on my Ubuntu machine.

So a big milestone for open-sapi is that it now supports the latest
and greatest free SAPI TTS voice from Microsoft. It is with open arms
with welcome Anna into our family.

Hi Tom, that is great news! What is the status of opensapi at the moment? Is it usable as a speech service with Orca as yet? I have now finished Vinux 2.0 - just a few patches to add etc. Once everything is stable I will be starting to work on Vinux 3.0 using Debian Squeeze as a base but it probably won't be released until Easter or something like that. So if you want to do some testing with Vinux 2.0 to see if Opensapi is stable enough to be included, even as an alternative service for the more daring or those who pine for SAPI voices. Let me know what you think and I will have a play with Opensapi in the meantime.

I believe that it is stable at the moment, the instability at the
moment is down to pulseaudio speech dispatcher and orca. Ha ha
pointing the fingers at everyone else but as far as the package goes
it is still quite a long way from being a usable solution at the
moment. It works but it really needs a complete rework and the speechd
module writing which i am avoiding as much as possible. :D

I am concentrating on a side branch at the moment but a large amount
of the work i am doing will translate directly back to the main
branch. These are error handling and unimportant things that we all
leave to the end.

I might try and sync up with you in the easter release if thats okay?
There is little point in adding in buggy software that is only half
implemented. I can then get a .deb file that allows an auto-
installation. By all means please promote the project but I suggest
you let the advantageous get stuck in if they feel up to the
challenge.
