Hi. I am a new member here, and if this has been discussed earlier I'm
sorry. I have a Windows Vista computer. I don't want to upgrade to 7
and I can't downgrade to XP because I'm blind and Mom doesn't have the
money to get it downgraded, and I can't downgrade it myself because I
can't see the setup screen. So, I'm stuck with Vista, unless I can
find a good and working XP VM that runs quickly enough to play audio
games, which require SAPI5, on. So, here's my situation. My sapi5 is
broken. One day, I was trying out a new TTS system, UKRVox or
something like that, I have no idea why I installed it, because it was
Russian and I don't know Russian more than I know how to build a car,
LOL. Well, I'm not sure how or when, but a few voices stopped, ah yes,
they were the Realspeak voices, but they stopped working, and I think
it was because of that Russian voice. Ah well, it was OK for a free
synthesizer. Anyways, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
realspeak voices, but they didn't work. At the time though, I didn't
know UKRavox wasn't the problem. Then, I did something I really
regret. In my pannic, thinking that the Sapi5.3 and 5.1 were
compatible, I installed 5.1. That, somehow, unregistered 5.3, and now
my screen reader, NVDA, the Klango social network, and all the other
programs that use the sapi.dll to get info on the voices have stopped
working, well the sapi5 part anyways, i can still use SAPI44. So, my
quesion is, can I use open-sapi in a way to fix sapi5.3? Or is there a
way to use open-sapi independent of sapi5.3 as if there is no sapi on
this system? I don't know if there can be a speech dispatcher for
Windows, and there is no orca, of course, but wine should be taken
care of, since this is windows itself.

Hi Devin - no opensapi cannot be used to fix sapi5 or even run it on windows - opensapi is a project to get sapi 5 voices working on Linux.

so, there is no way to fix my sapi5? Sapi4 works fine, but that's kind
of a different engine.

Can you not just uninstall sapi5 and then reinstall it from scratch?

I've never found an installer for Sapi5.3. I've found one for 5.1, but
not 5.3 though.

5.3 was build into and install from windows Vista up, I think the only
way might be to remove and then add the speech component of windows
back into. However I do not even know if this is possible in Vista. I
started using Linux after XP.
