The workaround with the adafruit_hostapd_14128.zip is becasue the wlan dongle is using a realtek chipset and they don't implement this properly.
I've been using this one (very expensive)

it uses the Ralink RT 5370 chipset. the original driver was so horrible, that the community wrote a proper one.

Technically it is probably possible, but it might not be able to serve as many users as the rpi2
