I haven't been active on this forum in a few years...
I noticed that PHD2 calculates HFD for every frame and both displays in on the Star Profile window and sends it out via the PHD Server for Looping and Guiding messages.

Is there any change of adding HFD to the frame-by-frame logging in the PHD2_GuideLog? I use an OAG now and I want to study these HFD values to see how they relate to the HFD values I calculate for my LIGHTframes.

HFD is a parameter that will halt guiding if it gets too low... so being able to see it's value throughout a guiding run would be useful.

I use the multi-star guiding mode most of the time now and I wondered whether this logic will switch between multi-stars during a single log section when calculating HFD?

Yes, it would be reasonable to do this.  In the meantime, the values are contained in the debug log file.  Choose the debug log file for the session you want and open it in any text editor.  Do a find on ‘HFD’ and you’ll see all the HFD values for all the stars that were used.  Choosing a suitable Min-HFD value should be a one-time operation for a given setup - but if you want to use the data for other purposes, you can do the log file extraction and import the data into a spreadsheet or wherever you want it.  If we add HFD to the guide log entries, it will apply only to the primary star in the multi-star list.

Bruce

Bruce,
Thanks for confirming that the HFD values that are being presented by PHD2 right now are all for the primary star in the multi-star list.  Is there any possibility that PHD2 will elect a new primary star during a single guiding run without issuing some sort of alert message?

No, star selection is triggered by the ‘auto-find’ function in the UI or by a ‘start guiding’ command from an imaging application.

Bruce,

Thanks for confirming what controls the selection of the primary star. I will study the HFD values in the DebugLog. I noticed that the HFD values displayed on the Star Profile window and in the looping and guiding server messages have more precision than those found in the DebugLog. The server message HFD values are formatted XX.XX and the HFD values in the DebugLog are formatted XX.X. I would ask that, if you do decide to add the HFD values to the GuideLog frame entries, that they be formatted XX.XX.

Regards,

Peter
