Hello,

Apologies if this it mentioned elsewhere but I didn't see it, and there doesn't seem to be a bug report site.

Upon loading 2.6.11 dev 2, and after dealing with MacOS security, the app crashes immediately upon opening. I am using the latest MacOS 12.5 Monterey.

Hi Lee.  Can you provide more supporting information – is there a PHD2 debug log file generated? What release of PHD2 were you running before the upgrade?  I suspect that your battle with MacOS security – whatever that was – wasn’t successful after all.  At least on Windows, security software can render an app unusable because it removes or quarantines underlying components that are required to run.  Once that happens, the whole download process has to be repeated.  Can you temporarily disable the anti-malware feature and retry the installation?

Regards,

Bruce

Hello Bruce,

Sorry for the delayed response as I was on travel.

I just retried the installation and the crash still occurs. I was running 2.6.11 dev 1 before the crash with no problems at all. A PHD2 log file was not generated. However, I captured the apple crash report. How should I send it to you?

How big is the file?  If it’s not huge, you can attach it to the forum message, otherwise you’ll have to push it to a cloud service and post a publicly available link.

Have you tried re-installing the 2.6.11 base release or 2.6.11dev1?  We need to know whether the problem is because of a change in your environment or something specific to PHD2.  Have you tried temporarily disabling the security app and doing the install with it turned off?

Hi

The log file is attached.

I can re-install 2.6.11dev1 with no issues. I’ve done that twice now.

I am unaware of how to disable the built-in MacOS application firewall. It seems to work ok when I follow the normal procedure to allow the PHD2 app to run, and no errors are generated at that time. It is only afterwords when I launch the PHD2 app

I just today tried to use PhD 2.6.11dev2 on a brand new Mac using MacOS 12.6. It still crashes immediately. Also, 2.6.11 dev 1 works just fine, just as it did on another machine running MacOS 12.5..

Sorry to hear you’re still having trouble.  We’ve been able to try this on 3 different Mac systems and it installs and runs fine.  So I don’t think we’re going to make any progress on it until we can get a failing case in our hands or someone with more Mac development experience gets involved.   That doesn’t help you much but I fear it’s the reality of the situation.

Understood. The only thing I can think of is that both the old and the new Mac had XCode installed and perhaps that has imposed extra security that is causing the crash. There is nothing else on the new machine I can think of other than kstars. It’s very strange that it crashes on the new otherwise pristine Mac.

Is there a dev 3 build I might try?

Dev2 is the last build and there’s no reason to think a subsequent build will fix the problem until we understand what’s wrong.  I don’t know anything about XCode so I don’t know if that’s a possible source.  The only thing I wonder about is the “newness” of these Mac systems you’re using.  Perhaps it’s possible that there’s a missing system library that hasn’t been installed but is present on older systems because of other apps that were installed.  That can happen on Windows, and in those cases it’s often one of the vendor-built camera drivers that is triggering the problem.  But really, I’m just guessing.

Interesting idea but it would have to be a library that dev 1 did not need.

I just realized that these PHD2 builds are Intel binaries. Both of my machines are M1 Apple machines, which means that the PHD2 applications are run through the Apple Rosetta translator. When the crash occurs, the crash report indicates that there was a segmentation fault trying to access the core libraries. I wonder if the build settings for dev 2 changed subtlety from dev 1 so that the Rosetta interactions have an issue.

If I may jump in...

I see the same behavior on my M1 14" MBP: Dev 2 crashes immediately on open, while dev 1 runs fine. I do notice that dev 1 doesn't have SVBony support (which I need). My GUESS (just a guess) is that the SVBony SDK is the culprit, although I do have the camera working in AstroDMX Capture. I think I see one major difference between the applications: AstroDMX appears to statically link the camera SDKs, while PHD2 looks to be using dynamic linking.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Archer, this is very helpful – it makes it pretty clear it’s something we’ve done and not a random problem on a particular PC.  Andy is the build guy and I’ve asked him to take a look at this.  We don’t have access to any non-Intel Mac systems so we might need some testing help.

Yep. I’m also seeing some sort of issue on EKOS, so it may be an SVBony bug.

Hi guys.  Andy just built a test version of dev2 for the Mac that doesn't contain the SVBony library.  If you don't use that camera, perhaps you could try this version and see if it solves the crashing problem.  if it does, we will pursue the problem with the camera vendor.

Thanks,

Hi Lee, Archer, and Lance,

Here are some test builds of PHD2 with the Svbony and ZWO camera SDKs disabled in PHD2.  These were the two camera SDKs that were updated in PHD2 2.6.11dev2 for MacOS. Would one of you guys be able to try these builds and let us know which of them crash on your M1 Mac and which ones do not crash (if any)?

Knowing which of these combinations crash should help us narrow down whether the issue is related to either of the camera SDKs or if it is just a coincidence and the M1 incompatibility is caused by something else in dev2.

Hi Everyone,

I've finally found a free weekend to experiment with this a bit. I'm trying to build PHD2 on my own Mac, and of course that is challenging because it requires an old MacOS SDK. Nevertheless I'm making progress.

But along the way I came across something related to wxWidgets. In the crash report that I get (for PHD2 2.6.11dev 4) this is the top of the trace:

Thread 0 Crashed::  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
0   PHD2                                  0x1034d7cf2 wxMacCoreGraphicsPenBrushDataBase::CalculateShadingValues(void*, double const*, double*) + 242

A bit of duckduckgo searching and I found this:

It seems this was a bug a few years ago in wxWidgets. There is a related open ticket here:

But there is no note on whether it was fixed in more recent versions of wxWidgets. So I thought I'd check to see if anyone knows whether the latest versions of PHD2 are using a more recent version of wxWidgets that might fix this issue?

I’m sorry David, there doesn’t seem to be any practical way for the main developers to investigate this because we don’t have access to a non-Intel Mac.  There has apparently been a change in the lower layers of the Mac system that is causing the WxWidgets code to fail.  The only option would seem to be blindly reverting changes in dev2 to see if the problem is avoided, a pretty unappealing approach.

I’d be surprised if this had anything to do with the mount driver.  What little we know suggests it’s probably a problem with the basic image/window display functions.

Stay tuned, Andy is working on a different approach that may tell us a lot more.  If it comes to testing, the initial go/no-go test will be immediate – PHD2 will either initialize or it won’t.

David, did you get the private e-mail I sent you yesterday with a link to a test version?  I think you should be able to do the initial test quickly during the daytime.

Hello Bruce,

Yes it appears to work. It did not get blocked by Roseatta at all on my Mac M2!

I downloaded the file from your private message ... 97.8Mb PHD-5.

The app successfully built my dark library for the SV305.  Tested 9:30pm EST Monday.

Best Regards David.

Thanks, David, that's good news.  Any other Mac users who have encountered this problem - an immediate crash of PHD2 after launch - should also try the test executable:

This version also seems to open and run properly on my MacBook with the M1 chip.
Thanks guys.

Bruce, that dev6 version of 2.6.11 you kindly provided was working fine on my macOS Monterey 12.7.1, unlike the one distributed from openphdguiding.org (that one was crashing).

I have just tried the new 2.6.12, and it is also crashing. Here is what I see in the terminal when trying to execute it from there:

% /Applications/PHD2.app/Contents/MacOS/PHD2

dyld[1689]: Library not loaded: '@rpath/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib'

  Referenced from: '/Applications/PHD2.app/Contents/MacOS/PHD2'

Reason: tried: '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/tmp/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/cameras/svblibs/mac/x64/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/cameras/toupcam/mac/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/tmp/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/cameras/svblibs/mac/x64/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/Users/andy/devel/phd2/cameras/toupcam/mac/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/usr/local/lib/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file), '/usr/lib/libSVBCameraSDK.dylib' (no such file)

zsh: abort      /Applications/PHD2.app/Contents/MacOS/PHD2

Looks like some dependencies on SVBony / Touptek SDKs.

Do you think you could work out a similar fix as what you did for 2.6.11? That would be amazing.

Andy just made a change based on your diagnostic info and he has updated the Mac version of the 2.6.12 release on our web site.  So please try downloading and installing it again.

Much appreciated, Bruce and Andy!
I can confirm the new binary is starting fine.

Kind regards,
— Kirill
