I'm looking for some basic information on 32bit vs 64bit ASCOM drivers and apps, and which flavor(s) PHD supports.

For instance, Stellarium 19.3 was just released with native ASCOM support, comes in 32 and 64 bit versions,  but I think all apps that need to connect to your mount would need to be the same architecture (all 32bit or all 64bit). Is that correct?

I'm assuming PHD2 is currently 32bits. There's no mention of 32 or 64 bits in the PHD2 doc. The only hint I can find is that there is a separate/new version for Mac OS Catalina (which would have to be 64 bits).

Thanks

Hi Glenn,
PHD2 on windows is a 32-bit application.  This generally does not prevent it from connecting to 64-bit ASCOM drivers since the "local server" type drivers run in their own process space which can be 64-bit and still support both 64-bit and 32-bit client applications like PHD2.   So for example you could have 32-bit PHD2 and 64-bit Stellariuum both connecting to a 64-bit ASCOM driver.  (Or to a 32-bit ASCOM driver for that matter.)
For imaging applications interacting with PHD2 (dither etc.), the CPU architecture (32- or 64-bit) is not relevant because the applications communicate using an architecture-independent protocol.

Andy,

The Stellarium Manual says:

Important: Most modern ASCOM drivers are written to run in 32bit and 64bit mode (any) and therefore are compatible with the 64bit and 32bit version of Stellarium. However, if you happen to have a 32bit or 64bit only driver for your telescope mount, you will also need to install the respective Stellarium version

And I have a focus driver that comes in two versions, 32bits and 64bits, and you can only have one installed at a time and they only seem to work with apps of similar Arch. Hence my confusion.

I also asked on the EQMOD group. No answer yet.

Thanks

Glenn,
EQMOD ASCOM is a local server driver, so both 32- and 64-bit apps can connect to it. You can use 32-bit PHD2 and either 32-bit or 64-bit Stellarium with EQMOD.

Andy I've seen this warning with NINA as well

maybe it's referring to drivers that are not set up as servers?

Well I will test 64bit Stellarium with EQMOD, PHD2, and SGP and report back.

Thanks!

In a limited daytime test, 64bit Stellarium with EQMOD, PHD2, and SGP, all seem to work fine together.

Thanks
