I have made many changes to my system over the course of several months recently and am almost starting over so it seemed to me that it would be a good idea to be able to use the Log Viewer to analyze results as I acquire them now.  I have downloaded and installed the Log Viewer 0.6.4.  I am having some difficulty learning how to use the application however.  Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I can load some old data and I see the displayed graph of RA and Dec corrections.  I see the box of statistics at the lower right with RMS and Peak values for RA and Dec.

I can use the mouse and <ctrl> key to select a portion of the data.  However, when I do that the Statistics box values do not change.  It seems that the data values there still reflect analysis of the entire Guide Log.  Is that true?  How do I see the statistics for just the selected portion of the Guide Log?

If I right click and choose "Analyze the selected frames", a new window entitled "Analysis" appears that seems to still include the entire Guide Log.  Is that true?  I can zoom and pan that Analysis window, but I can't do anything else.  And, again the values in the Statistics box do not change.

I am sure I must be missing something simple in using the Log Viewer.  I have looked at the tutorial document and it suggests to me that I can analyze selected parts of the Guide Log, but I don't know how to do that.  Can someone help please?
Thanks,
Manning B

Hi Manning

using selections of the guidelog works for me regarding refined RMS and analysis. Are you sure you are deselecting portions of the log correctly? example attached

Upload your guidelog and we can doublecheck

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your reply. First, what version of the Log Viewer are you using?  I am using 0.6.4.

You ask if I am deselecting correctly.  I don't understand your question.  I am trying to select a portion of the Guide Log aren't I?

I am attaching an old Guide Log I found just to learn about the Log Viewer.  [I tried uploading the Guide Log, but for some reason, PHD2 isn't finding it and I don't see how to set the file location of the log.]

The details about the file are unimportant, but please find a small portion of the file where the corrections are about 1" or less and select it.  When I do that, I get an RMS RA value of 3.63" and a peak RA value of 61.38".  That makes no sense to me since I have deliberately selected the corrections  to be less than 1".  What am I missing?  What do you see when you do this test?

Also, how do I paste in a screen capture as you did above?  When I try to paste, nothing happens.

Thanks,
Manning B

Hi Manning

This appears to be a log from a very old version of PHD2 - i hope you are on the latest dev release

>>>First, what version of the Log Viewer are you using?  I am using 0.6.4.
i'm using 0.6.4 as well. I tested your log and it works as expected including updating the RMS when I select portions of the guide segment

>>>You ask if I am deselecting correctly.  I don't understand your question.  I am trying to select a portion of the Guide Log aren't I?

control-click-drag removes the portion of the log you want to analyze, not adds to it. It starts by having all the entire run included (minus dither)
shift-click-drag adds the portion of the log you want to analyze

If it's greyed out, that means it's deselected from analysis

>>>Also, how do I paste in a screen capture as you did above?  When I try to paste, nothing happens.

I am just copying and pasting screen grabs, nothing fancy

Thank you, Brian, for explaining that <ctrl> click DESELECTS a portion of the log.  I had that backwards.

However, <shift> - click - drag doesn't seem to do anything.  Again, I am probably missing something simple.  If I <shift> - click - drag INSIDE a deselected part of the log, then that portion becomes UNgreyed out and therefore, I guess, UNdeselected, i.e. selected.  Is that what you meant?

As to the age of the file and the PHD2 version that created it, yes, it is old.  That is why I said the file details are unimportant, I just wanted something to use to understand how Log Viewer works.  I think, with your help, I am getting there.  Thank you!

HI Manning

Let's put it this way:
grey = not included in the analysis
not grey = included in the analysis

so if you have everything "not grey" you can't shift-click-drag because it's already included

If you are just try to analyze a small portion of your guidelog, you may want to start with everything not included.

To do that, right click in the graph and choose "Exclude all frames", then shift-click-drag the portion you want to analyze

Only commenting  because it's been raised.

I've always found "remove all then select a section" quite unintuitive.

The average Windows user would expect Shift-Drag to highlight and select the section they want to analyse.

Without having to remove all first.

But the Log Viewer Quick Help Instruction are clear.
