Laptop speakers work but no audio alarm when star lost in Phd2....screen flashes red....but no audio beep. Other programs give audio ie Nebulosity sounds when sequence ended.
Any suggestions ?
Cheers
Lynn

Hi Lynn, sorry you're having a problem. Can you tell us what OS/Release and
what PHD2 release you're running? We can't see the problem running on
Windows 7 with 2.6.2 and this code in PHD2 hasn't changed for years. If you
open the volume control panel in Windows and crank up the volume, can you
hear the default bell tone? Are you using internal or add-on speakers? Are
you doing this locally or is there a remote desktop style app in the middle?

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce
Thanks for responding....am using Windows 7 with Phd 2.5.0 ( will update tomorrow).
Yes tones test fine in the speakers...internal speakers. Audio alarm absent both as local operation and when connected remotely....I use to hear it locally in the obs when connected remotely, I use a baby monitor beside the laptop so I can hear the lost star alarm ( its my cheap cloud sensor!).....or use to be....
cheers

Well, I suspect this is going to be a challenge. :-)  I absolutely don't want to drift into one of these support dialogs where I ask you to be sure your computer is plugged in - we all love those. <lol>  But maybe you could just march through this specific dialog.  In Win7, go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, then click on the 'Sounds' tab.  You should see this dialog:

The arrows point to the things that you might look at – the ‘Test’ button lets you play the sound.  The Windows Ding.wav sound is one of the faintest ones in the list on my system and can be quite hard to hear.  You can temporarily change the “default beep” to a different sound if that helps. This would indicate whether the problem is with the specific sound or is related to the triggering event.

We had a similar complaint from another user on the Stark Labs forum and his problem just disappeared when he went into this dialog and poked around a little.  Very odd.  For now, we don’t see how it can be a PHD2 thing but are wondering if a Windows update has caused a problem.

Let us know what you find,

Bruce

Thanks for the help....Im certain its a Windows upgrade issue. I purposely disable Win 7 upgrade a while back as it was active all the time in the background and cause my cpu to run at 100%.....
I think the lack of star lost alarm happened around that time...and I notice I get no sound when I test the Windows alarms, sounds....even though the speakers work with other audio files.
I will probably upgrade to 8.1 or 10 to avoid the Win7 issues. But I dont think I'll risk the upgrade for a few days as I still have a couple of nights of perfect seeing and no moon ahead LOL.
Consider the issue reolved and thanks for the hand holding !

But wait!! :-) Lynn, come back! The other person I was referring to is
running Windows 8.1 and apparently still has the problem. So upgrading may
not help you. Did you experiment with playing different sounds as part of
the 'Default Beep' event in the control panel? Was there any way to
re-assign that event to a different sound, one you could hear? Or is the
whole thing broken?

If this is a Windows update problem, I fear we're going to get a lot of
complaints, so it would be good to know if there's a viable workaround.
Since neither Andy nor I can reproduce the problem, maybe you can help us
out.

Thanks,
Bruce

Ok, Ok...Im back :)
Ive tried different assignments and cant get any of the Windows wav files to play under the test button. Interesting that I can hear sounds generated in other programs like the end of sequence sound/notification in Nebulosity.
I have another (Win 8.1) laptop and I will hook everything up and test the lost star alarm with it...just so we have an apples to apples with my imaging setup in the obs.
Might take a day or to as I dont want to loose next 2 nights of imaging.
Ill keep you posted as I play...
cheers

Still playing....I opened the Wav files under Windows - Media and they all play through the speaker when opened with Windows Media Player. Still no joy in the Control Panel under Sounds with Test button.

Hi again Lynn.  The other fellow just posted that he found the problem - the "system sounds" in the volume mixer had been magically muted.  Worth a look if you haven't already been there...
