I am looking to buy the Orion Starshoot All-In-One.  Does anyone know if it works with PHD2 and on Linux?  If not, can someone suggest a comparable camera which is supported?

Also, is there list somewhere of supported cameras?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Looking at http://www.indilib.org/forum/general/878-support-for-orion-starshoot-g3-ccd.html it seems you're out of luck :-/
Maybe it helps if you too ask Orion.

Thanks.  It looks like some cameras are supported via INDI and some are supported directly.  Is that correct?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

That is correct, INDI cameras will work, plus we have built-in native support for some other cameras. Here is the current status of our Linux camera support.  We are going to put a page on our wiki with this info.
  • INDI cameras - PHD2 on Linux should work well with any camera that has an INDI driver
  • QHY5  - just the QHY5, not QHY5LII etc. General QHY camera support for Linux is in progress though we are waiting for QHY to provide us an updated Linux SDK. A prototype SDK was provided several months ago.
  • Starlight Xpress cameras
  • ZWO ASI cameras

Thanks, Andy.  One more question -- QHY, Starlight Xpress and ZWO all seem to be covered by INDI already.  Is there a reason to have both?  The reason I ask is that it seems like leaving that sort of thing to INDI would make life easier, wouldn't it?

Thanks,
Matt

Im working with a "Manhatten" usb-ttys converter. You need to add your user to dialout group.

Sure, from a development perspective it would be simpler if it were just INDI. But the burden of maintaining the built-in drivers is nominal and we don't see any need to disturb any users who are already using the built-in drivers. We have the analogous issue on the Windows side where we support several cameras through ASCOM and also natively. There are various reasons why some users prefer to use one connection method over the other, so we continue to support both. We don't really see this as an impediment to development since once we have a working camera, the ongoing maintenance is minimal.
