I am considering purchasing a Meade LX85 that is supposed to do pulse guiding. I have downloaded the ascom drivers for it and I see it in PHD2 and NINA and well as Cartes du Ciel software. I do not know if I can use a Max232 circuit to talk directly to the mount like I can with my other mounts. So has anyone actually enabled pulse guiding via EQMOD using the hand controller? My other question is it possible to code PHD2 to pulse guide without EQMOD?

There are ASCOM drivers specific to the Meade family of mounts so you should probably find the right one and use that.  I don't know why you're bringing EQMOD into things, we see that being used for the numerous EQ- branded mounts.  PHD2 does pulse-guiding with any ASCOM mount driver that supports it.

I bring up eqmod because I use it on my hdx-110 and eq-g Orion mounts. I am happy with that setup so hopefully I could use the same setup with the lx-85. I do have a celestron mount that has to be connected pc to hand controller and eqmod is not used. Seems that the lx-85 is going to be setup like that one. I do have the lx-85 ascom drivers installed and can select them in phd2 , cartes du ciel and Nina. The pulse guiding option is hazy since I don’t see a option to enable it on any of those programs.  So next step is to actually buy the mount. Prior to selecting the lx-85 I was looking at the Orion Sirius aka eq5 mount. That mount is supported in eqmod.
