I downloaded what seemed to be the right ASCOM driver for a Nikon camera, but PHD2 can't connect. It says ASCOM Camera Driver For DSLR, and  I click Connect, and the error reads: "ASCOM driver missing the CAMERAXSize Property." Any idea what to do?

Thanks.

Hi 2Brain

This is an error outside of PHD2. You should contact the ascom driver author or find other users of the driver and see what success they have had

ASCOM support for DSLR cameras is a bit experimental imo.

Actually I think PHD2 is working. However, NINA is not. It can't connect to the camera (I think). Any idea why PHD2 can connect and NINA not? I would think if the ASCOM driver is good for 1 it should be good for the other.

that would be a question for NINA. In general if it's an ascom camera, it should work but NINA has a lot of added bells and whistles for interrogating the camera driver

Actually maybe an issue with PHD2...my camera connects. When I go to drift align, it won't let me enter any offsets. It says connect camera aned mount. I don't have an electronic mount. All slewing has to be done by hand. Can I still drift align?

you are connecting the mount to guide, right?

Give it a shot

My manual mount is connected to a tracker, the camera on top of that. When I click drift, it doesn't seem to respond. Just connect camera and mount. When I try Polar Align, I hear my camera taking shots. Does that sound promising? Not sure why Drift Align would fail and Polar not.

Your tracker is the mount, right? it sounds like you are saying mount = tripod, but the tracker needs to be plugged in to your computer to guide.

If that makes sense, then just make sure those connections are there

If that doesn't make sense, you should review how to guide with your mount and make sure you are clear on how things need to be connected

I am only trying to align, not guide. I have the Skyguider Pro, and it is not plugged in. My computer is only plugged into the camera. So, tripod, manual mount, tracker, then computer plugged into a computer. I thought I could align only with this equipment.

which polar align procedure are you attempting to use?

you might try the SPA method. Drift Align requires you to be calibrated prior to using, so that isn't going to work

I have a similar type of mount, these polar align routines might be overkill for what you're doing. Not sure of your image scale.

Does polar alignment require me to see close to  Polaris? Is that tyhe SPA u mean?  I hope to use a 35mm lens, an 85mm, and maybe a 180mm. So I have to have pretty good alignment.

yes, for the SPA tool

If you aren't familiar with the three methods of polar align within PHD2, it's worth reading the manual on them

Your setup is so widefield i personally think using something within PHD2 is overkill. doesn't that mount have a built-in polar align procedure/scope?

There’s an extensive section in the manual that describes the basic behavior of the three polar alignment routines including tutorials for how to do each of them. It’s in the Tools and Utilities section.  I think it would be worth your time to study that.

Yes, I've seen the 3 methods, but apparently Drift is the only 1 where u don't have to see Polaris' region. I need this to work as I will want to use a foal length over 100mm. But it seems to be saying I need a mount to connect to. Is that the case?

Have you looked into trying BackyardNikon? I have been using the Canon
version of this (BackyardEOS) for many years, and it works great. It has
a drift alignment tool that does not need a mount connection. It's at
https://www.otelescope.com/

Do u have to see Polaris for this? How does it do drift alignment? It's more than manual drift alignment?

It is a drift alignment so is still largely manual, but it has displays on the screen to help you measure the drift amount and determine how much to adjust your alt and az bolts.

And no, you don't need to be able to see Polaris; drift alignment never does.

Can u drift align with no connected mount? That is, I would rotate the mount manually. Otherwise I guess I can't use any PHD2 tool.

Yes, that's how it is normally done.
