Log View RMS versus Live View RMS

[KTAZ]

Hello all;

Can somebody help me understand why the Total RMS shown on the live view graph is always different that that which is shown on the Log? Is it due to a difference in the time over which these numbers are averaged? Or is it related to the way excursions, due to dithering, are subtracted?

This was the view on screen after guiding for a short time:

But if I open PHD Log Viewer and open the file, it shows nearly 2x:

So which number is truly representative of my guiding performance?

the log viewer removes dithering, which usually explains the difference

Settling frames after dither are automatically excluded from statistics calculation

Hi Ken,

When you say the log viewer shows nearly x2, jbe aware that the live view RMS shows px first with arcsec in parentheses, whereas the Log Viewer has them the other way around. I've often wondered why the live view format hasn't been updated to show arcsecs first, as that really is the best (most meaningful) measure - I guess it's a legacy from the original PHD....
