Hi everyone
I am trying to get my asi120mm connected to phd2. The camera is
recognised and it detects e.g. the pixel size of 3.75.

1. After the first run, the wizard crashes at building the dark library
AppStamp: 568cca2e
ModName: asicamera2.dll
ModVer: 1.11.0.13
ModStamo: 566927d9
iDebug: 0
Offset: 00035c52

2. restarting PHD2, the camera connects (I see 'Camera connected' at
bottom left) but the screen remains dark and no frames are taken. I've
tried pointing the camera at light, through the telescope, or not but
nothing is seen on the PHD2 screen. No image.

3. I've tried PHD2 2.6.0 and 2.6.1

4. I tried building a dark library by selecting the windows webcam
instead of the zwo. It builds the library this time but still dispays
nothing on screen.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

The crash is originating from the camera driver and usually indicates a communication problem between the camera and the PC.  You should try swapping the USB cable, eliminating any USB hubs and/or USB extension cables between the camera and the PC, and try using a different USB port on the PC.  Try changing one thing at a time so you can isolate the source of the problem.

Sorry Andy, I thought I got an e-mail when there was a reply. I'll check back here in future.
Anyway, the cables were OK so I've sent back the camera for a replacement. Question, to guide with PHD2 and the asi120mm via the st4 port, do I need to install ascom too?
TIA

Hi Andy, everyone.

Here is the reply from my supplier:

I've managed to test the returned camera now.
It worked fine with Firecapture and Sharpcap, but in PHD2 in the middle
of the dark library build process it returns an error message:

No ZWO camera detected. then when I close it it says
Runtime Error!
Program: C;|Program Files (x86)\PHDGuiding2\phd2.exe
R6025
- pure virtual function call

in PHD2 there is also a message:

After 16.0 sec the camera has not completed a 1.0 sec exposure, so
it has been disconnected to prevent other problems. If you think the
hardware is working correctly, you can increase the timeout period on
the Camera tab of the Advanced Settings Dialog. PHD will make several
attempts to re-connect the camera.

--- --- ---
I tried longer timeouts but with no joy.

Any comments or help most grateful.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi again
I'm wondering is the best plan would be to forget the zwo camera and
order one which we know _will_ work with PHD2? The supplier can't get it
to work either.
Cheers,
Steve

You would not need ASCOM to use the ST4 port.

However we highly recommend communicating directly with the mount using the mount's ASCOM driver rather than going through the camera.

OK, thanks. The problem seems to be with the zwo drivers, or maybe just
on w10. Could anyone point me at zwo drivers that will work? So far I've
drawn a blank with both my supplier and zwo. If it's not possible to use
this camera for guiding, can anyone recommend an alternative?
Thanks again,
Steve

We have lots of users using ZWO ASI cameras for guiding. Ordinarily I test PHD2 with my ZWO camera on my Windows 7 PC. Just now I just tested a ZWO ASI 120MM on a Windows 10 laptop using the latest drivers from the ZWO site and PHD2 2.6.1dev7 and did not see any problems.  This tells us that the problems you saw seem to be specific to your camera and/or PC combination, not a general problem with ZWO cameras, PHD2 , or Win 10 (I know that does not help you!)

I'm not sure what else we can do to diagnose this since I guess you no longer have the camera.

Thanks Andy
It's turned into my responsibility to prove to the dealer that it is the
camera that is at fault and that they send me a replacement. Would you
mind if I sent them a link to this thread? When I tested the latest PHD2
version was dev6. Has anything zwo-wise changed for dev7?
TIA,
Steve

Steve,
There were no ZWO-related changes between 2.6.1dev6 and 2.6.1dev7. And sure, you can link to this thread; it's a public forum, but thanks for asking.

Hi again
OK. Just thinking out loud. Is there anything in 2.6.1 stable or in dev6
which would cause building the dark libraries to fail? If so, I can try
to convince them to try dev7 and then if that works to return the
camera. Otherwise a new camera.

Sorry to be a pain but I'm finding difficulty in communicating with my
supplier. They tell me that the returned camera works with fire capture
but not with PHD2, finding as I the crash during the dark libraries
build and inability to connect by choosing not building the libraries
either. I've contacted zwo too but it's been over a week now...
TIA,
Steve

Hi Steve,

There were not any changes in 2.6.1 stable or in dev6 which would cause building the dark libraries to fail.  Just to be paranoid I tried 2.6.1 on the Win10 PC and I found that PHD2 refused to launch, complaining about the Altair camera lib.  I'm not sure why nobody else has seen this or reported it.  But anyway it has nothing to do with the ZWO problem, and I did re-confirm that 2.6.1dev7 worked fine--able to build a dark library and capture exposures.

One thing to confirm: are you using the camera selection "ZWO ASI Camera", or the ZWO ASCOM driver?  The selection "ZWO ASI Camera" is what I have been testing with and finding no problems in 2.6.1dev7.   If you are not sure or cannot remember, you can look in your PHD2 debug log from when you still had the camera (or post it here as an attachment and we'll check.)

Thanks again Andy. My supplier has had PHD2 crash and needs to reinstall so here'
s hoping he's reading this as it really does now point to a camera hardware fault.

Confirm: ZWO ASI Camera. Not ASCOM
Thanks again for keeping with me.

OK. So PHD2 2.6.1 doesn't work with Windows 10...

I would not draw that conclusion based on one single PC having trouble.

Hi
OK, thanks for the reply.

My situation is that I am trying to get a zwo asi120mm working with
PHD2. I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities as to why the zwo
doesn't work. It's difficult without the data. Maybe a better question
would be: Do we have any users using PHD2 with Windows 10? Then I could
get back to my supplier having eliminated or confirmed windows 10. Even
better, could you tell me the version of windows where you got the zwo
working that you mentioned previously? We can the concentrate only on
those versions. Any info for a combination which definitely works would
be great.
Sorry to be a pain and TIA again.
Steve

I used PHD 2.6.1 on Windows 10 Home last night with a ASI120MM (native drivers) without a problem for 7 hours. I had built a dark library earlier in the day without a problem as well.

It builds the dark library and although you can see objects in daylight,
nothing can be seen at night. Not even Jupiter.
