Is the Mac version of PHD2 being updated to 64 bit to be compatible with the next version of Mac OS being released later this year?

Thanks for the heads-up about Apple ending support for 32-bit apps in upcoming 10.15 Catalina.

There are a couple factors holding us back us from creating a 64-bit macOS version of PHD2.
  • The project's donated 2007 32-bit Mac Mini is too old to be upgraded beyond 10.7.5 Lion.  The old Mac Mini is adequate for producing the 32-bit PHD2 builds, but cannot be used for converting PHD2 to 64-bit. In the past when we have needed access to a more modern Mac (as we did for adding INDI support), Brian Valente graciously allowed us to use his MacBook Pro.  Going forward, we would need a Catalina-compatible Mac permanently available (i.e. donated) for ongoing PHD2 64-bit macOS releases.
  • Most of the camera drivers built-in to PHD2 are binary drivers obtained from the camera manufacturers. In some cases we have 64-bit versions of the drivers available (e.g. QHY, ZWO), but in other cases we do not (e.g. Meade DSI). For those cameras that do not have a 64-bit SDK available, we would need to work with the manufacturers to get new drivers. It is possible that some manufacturers might not be able to provide 64-bit drivers at all, but we won't know that until we contact them and ask.

Andy,
I am willing to donate $ 100.00 for the acquisition of a 2012 or later mac that can be used for programing PHD2 upgrades to work with Catalina or later.  If you or another group member have any way to put the word out and get additional commitments  for the acquisition of a Mac of some sort.  In my opinion the aquisition of a new or near new Mac Mini would be the best way to go because a newer computer would be compatible for much longer than the previous generations.  Unfortunately the newest Mac Minis had a price increase which makes a used older one more attractive.

Just a suggestion - but wouldn't this be an opportunity for those of us that feel we need to donate something to the on-going PHD Guiding project a chance to fulfil that need??

I think I’ve expressed my opinion about the need to update PHD2 to support the 64 bit version of the Mac build.

Since Orion's StarShoot Autoguider relies on PHD to fulfill their advertised claim of Mac compatibility, it would seem to make sense for them to donate a Mac to allow this development to proceed. I've written to them to suggest that.

Hey Dave. Did you receive a response from Orion about your inquiry? Curious to know the status of this, since PHD2 has not been updated, with the Catalina release you cannot even launch PHD2 anymore.

Hi Daniel

I don’t know If you’ve been following the releases, but PHD2 for Catalina seems pretty solid now:

Andy is the version that is listed on the Dev snapshot the 64 bit version?

Thanks

Brian

Brian,
Yes, that is the latest greatest build for Catalina right now.  We'll be updating the web site as soon as we can now that we have a stable build.
I am going to lock this old thread so people don't keep finding it and piling on.
Andy
