Tim O'Reilly spoke at this week's DrupalCon about the future of open source: open data. Very insightful, and arguing for the need for projects like Open Marketplace.

Would love to hear what you all think about the Facebook announcements today... they are spinning it all as open protocols but don't trust them not to try to own it all.

This is a must watch for OM peeps! What Tim O'Reilly describes are the
same issues that OM address.

A more detailed analysis to come :)

Tim O'Reilly mentions Facebook specifically as an example of a data source that, while currently openly available, only remains so at their own discretion. This represents a huge risk for anyone basing a business model on the ongoing availability of Facebook's Social Graph.

Over the past couple decades, the technology industry has seen again and again the dangers of vendor lock-in. One of Tim's most interesting points is that Open Source (and by extension Open Data) is always the ally of the underdog. So, Google has developed the open-source Open Social to undermine Facebook's Social Graph hegemony, and suggests that even Microsoft will likely embrace open-source, perhaps in search, to undermine Google's dominance in that arena.

We certainly live in interesting times!

Christopher,

I just received the files from Ramal, but looking at the
openmarketplace.org site, you pretty much got it all in.

Is there anything I could help you with?

Just a quick note, the index page is at the moment the OM Manifesto.
Is that right? Shouldn't be the About OM?

Also I would reduce the opacity on the background image (if it stays for
now) to get more visual of the "create new account" lines.
Would it be easy for you to twitch the image or should I help? Let me know.
Thanks,

Joanne
