Hi Everyone,

I'm attempting to upgrade my ETCnet2 2-port (Originally OEM'ed by Pathway) to run Pathway firmware. I've been told by Pathway tech support that this upgrade is possible, however, no one I can find online has come forward with instructions on how to conduct this upgrade. Because of the original OEM agreement with ETC, Pathway can't assist in this upgrade without written permission from ETC. Sadly, ETC won't give out that permission. I was hoping I could find someone here to help me with this little project.

Here is a link to an online forum that sparked my interest in this upgrade.

Thanks!
Zach

Thanks for this. Can't wait to hear a solution if someone has it. There are a few things we could try. Mainly just downloading the old 2 port code from pathway and renaming it? They get their code from a central tftp server.

1) So find code that is compatible
2) Possibly rename it to the same thing ETC uses
3) That year is a little old so, You may need to drop into bootloader mode with instructions to download from a server (This would be in the pathport protocol), or drop into boot loader mode and push new code with the client (THIS MAY BRICK YOUR DEVICE)
4) There may be some configuration about this.

Most of this is conjecture based on watching pathport nodes on wireshark. Please be careful if you find a walk through it would be good to know.

Hi Sean,

Pathway has v3.2.0.3 binaries for their devices on their website. Would this process work for the ETC nodes? http://www.pathwayconnect.com/content/view/146/37/

What software should I be using to push the code? NCE? I downloaded the latest from ETC, and it doesn't match the .bin file Pathway gives on its downloads. What should I do?

If you have some time to fiddle with it, I would be more than happy to mail my node to you. Or, if you would feel comfortable working over a skype/facetime call, I would be happy to do that as well. Let me know!

Hey Zach,

I'd love to help but time is a little short this week and next.

I think NCE is what you will want (That's the older pc software?). You need to find the file that it tries to serve to the node, rename it to something like .bak and drop the pathway bin there (I think, I'm not sure if this is recoverable) Let me ask around.

Take the Binary from Pathway Manager Firmware File and put it in the Firmware file of ETC Updator-ator. You will need to look at the node firmware file name and then match them. Updator-ator will push the update to the node, then you will have to use Pathport Manager to update the settings.

Sounds easy enough. Can I use the latest version of the binary file from pathport?

Make sure NCE is installed (I used 4.0.2.9.0.1)
I also needed GCE installed (used 3.0.2.9.0.18)
You will want Pathport Manager installed to manage the node once upgraded.

-in the c:\etc\nodesbin folder rename twoport.bin to twoport.old
-download the pathport firmware from their website.
-copy in the pathport firmware to the nodesbin folder and rename to twoport.bin. I used ppimage-3.7.0.bin.
Connect to your node or network.
(I used a POE injector to do this at my desk, this also removed the chance of messing with any other nodes)
Run NCE.
Network -> Connect
Get unbound nodes.
Version Detect and Upgrade Utility.
(select the node)
Update selected.

The node will now probably end up showing:
bootp. Dynamic IP forced.

Run GCE
Network -> Configure network and services (this may take 10-15 seconds to respond)
(select "Network Services" tab if not already selected)
Start (if not already)
-Address DHCP
-Update Service
-Discovery Service

When the services are running you should see the node complete the TFTP transfer and then reboot as a Pathport node.

Run Pathport Manager and configure your now more capable node. For us this meant sending/receiving sACN.

There was gibberish in the Node name and port name fields. We deleted this and resent the config.
So far the nodes are working perfecetly with sACN and we've just avoided buying 12 nodes.

YMMV.

Good luck.
