hello

i have been using OLA for a while now and just have run into a bit of problem.. I need to have more than 4 different Art Net universes running, but cannot seem to setup anymore with an Artnet INPUT..
I can have more universes where the Art Net is an option as an OUTPUT but not as INPUT.. does OLA limit the number of Artnet input instances? I installed it on my mac using macports .. i have tried opening up the arntet.conf file but cannot see if there are some settings i need to change..

I need to add another 10 or so art net universes to my project.. as we are using OLA to convert Art Net Inputs  - into E1.31 and also OSC outputs ..
is this going to be possible?

image attached shows me trying to add another universe but not having the art net input as an option..

any help would be greatly appreciated !

Artnet has some limitation of 4 universes per IP address (node). I don't know the details, google them.
To overcome this limitation you may attach multiple IP addresses to one network adapter.

hi jano

thanks for that suggestions - i tried the multiple ip's attached to the single ethernet adapter ( OS X ) and although i am able to setup multiple ip's and am confident that they are online. however when i load OLA i cannot see more than just the one ip.. so the 4 universe limitation remains.. anyone else have much experience with this?

thanks

I don't think that there is support right now for more than 4 ArtNet inputs (I need that myself also !!)

Right now, the amount of ArtNet input ports is fixed at 4.

thanks for that rui - seems to be the case.
what is frustrating is that really there is a single Atnet coming into OLA.. straight out of Madmapper on a local host into OLA, which i just wanted to act as an Art net to E1.31 bridge across multiple universes, in order to speak to some led pixel strips.. we are not doing anything more than that. but i just do not know of a different Art net to E1.31 converter on OS X..

art net is dead.

Well, it's not, since many desks still in the market only talk ArtNet (or other proprietary protocols like MaNet, etc) and it's cheaper to buy ArtNet <-> Physical ArtNet controllers than new desks.

What ArtNet needs is a protocol change to support more universes per IP.
E1.31 is not common yet in lighting desks.

Can you run one OLAD for each IP address? (I'm just asking/suggesting since I haven't played with ola too much)
Something like olad -i XX.XX.XX.XX -p 90XX -r 90XX --pid-location /var/run/oladXXX.pid

Now that made me laugh! It still dominates DMX over Ethernet streaming but perhaps not in your world.

I think the more frustrating thing is companies who write software that doesn’t output both Art-Net and E1.31 which leads to their customers seeking bridge solutions and then you hit this kind of issue. Perhaps better to fight this at the source rather than trying to bridge? At least Madmapper doesn’t broadcast everything like Arkaos still do.

Why not buy pixel strip controllers that accept Art-Net? Problem solved without a pile of stuff in the middle.

the pixel strip controllers from Joshua1 do support Art Net II now.. so problem solved. using unicasting we can still talk to all the universes at the speed we were after, and just using OLA to convert one of the artnet universes to OSC for a set of custom lights that run via I2C from arduino's
and like you mentioned - mad mapper does support up to Art Net III as of 2.0 with unicasting.
