I have a debian etch (vmware guest) box running 2.6.18-6-686. With both open-iscsi 2.0.730-1etch1 and 2.0.869.2-2 (from sid) the system hangs when trying to log in to the MD3000i. Not having done this before I'm fooling around with directions from [1] and running:

iscsiadm --mode discovery --type sendtargets --portal 10.0.9.10
iscsiadm -m node -T iqn.1984-05.com.dell:powervault.6001c23000d59fc6000000004754447a -p 10.0.9.10:3260 -l -d 8

and I get [2], where the system locks up after:

Logging in to [iface: default, target: iqn.1984-05.com.dell:powervault.6001c23000d59fc6000000004754447a, portal: 10.0.9.10,3260]

Two lines are printed on the console where you can see it's starting to detect the disks, where it displays that it's an MD3000i.

MDSM reports:

I've added the host on the MD3000i and configured the virtual disk mapping but haven't set up any sort of authentication. Does anyone have any tips?

The 2.6.18 kernel that ships with etch has some problems with iscsi;
what worked for me was to divert the Debian iscsi modules and install
ones that I compiled from the open-iscsi tarball. There should be
instructions on how to do that in the open-iscsi README.
Alternatively, you can install a 2.6.25 or newer kernel; I preferred
to stay with the Debian kernel to get security updates and whatnot,
but I also tried 2.6.25 and it survived some amount of iscsi stress
testing.
Cheers.

Can you attach the serial output or a screen shot?

Of the linux servers console? Sure I can dig one up, it's the first two lines of the scsi disk sort of display, twice. Something sort of like:

Disk: DELL Model: MD3000
Blah blah blah blah

I don't recall exactly what it said, but it wasn't very interesting.

Preferably the whole thing from start. Not just the last X lines.

It is for kernel engineers. Also please pass in as bootup parameter this value 'loglevel=8'.

I'm not sure loglevel=8 produced any additional information, but here's what I've got.

Screenshot of console at the time is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/btmspox/2506371788/

I can rig together a serial console or something if that + /var/log/dmesg is not sufficient.

Iscsi traffic stops with each interface on the iscsi host sending a segment with the reset flag set and the box no longer responds to icmp echo requests.

SSH and the console both lock up until I reset the vmware guest.

The newer tools do not support the kernel modules in 2.6.18*. The
interface was not stablized until 2.6.22. If you want to use the
2.6.18-6-686 you have to use the kernel modules that come with the
open-iscsi.org releases.

Yeah, that worked; thanks guys. I did see the ib_iser errors on startup but it looks like it just didn't load due to the symbol problems discussed in the readme.
