Hey y'all.
Check this out:
http://code.google.com/apis/protocolbuffers/
This is google's binary serialization mechanism. It's eerily similar
to GTO, but without any graphics-specific ideas. I think GTO does all
the same things better, but this is presented much more nicely.
It's worth a look, for comparison.
