Does anyone know of a food ontology?
Could Freebase Food and Drink Commons ids be used?
Many of the queries being requested of the datasets could answered by putting the necessary types and properties into an ontology, RDFS and OWL and answered using SPARQL.

Hi,
you might find these useful:

AGROVOC from FAO - http://www.fao.org/agrovoc
Linked Recipes - http://linkedrecipes.org/schema
Cheese (work in progress) - https://github.com/castagna/cheese/blob/master/cheese.ttl

Extracting slices of data out of Freebase makes a lot of sense.
RDF is not everyone's taste, but it makes a lot of sense giving what you are trying to do.

Regards,
Paolo
