Hi All-

I was just tweeting with Doug about this. Since the time and availability for participating in Open Everything Global event on 31 Oct is limited; why not just do an education campaign instead. Open Access is the week before, I believe starting October 19. So our participation could be from the 19 Oct to the 31 Oct to twitter, write blogs, and promote links to anything and everything we find interesting or relevant to the Open Everything movement. We could even combine this with a print/flyer campaign in Madison or generically designed so other cities could use them as well.

My idea is not fully formulated, but goes like so:

(1) A Flyer Series: Like I did for OpenCamp, we can design a series of four to six flyers tackling different areas of interest, open access, open software, open content, open government (or others), make them available for download, and work with different groups to post. They would just be informational flyers, maybe point people back to the group for more information, etc. We could even use QR-Codes since that's my current experiment.

(2) Twitter: It's only 2 weeks, we could focus on recruiting anyone from the group who's also on Twitter to participate in a Twitter campaign, people could be assigned to different days, so everyone has their day or days, where there responsibility is to tweet (some minimum number of times that day) about something related to open everything, with a designated tag.

(3) Blogs: Anyone with a blog could write a blog post about open everything, or some aspect of open everything they're interested in, or highlight any of the events elsewhere that are part of the day.

The goal is tasks we can fit in during our busy days, educate and promote, and hopefully generate some interest, before our November event (if we can iron out with the Open Access folks).

What say you all?

Alnisa

P.S. Also anyone from anywhere can participate in the Twittering and Blogging. Since the idea is to push OE in general, and can be linked back to any OE group as they like.

Just want to make clear for the open-everything-discuss list that
Alina's message also went to the Madison list (who is not getting this
message, for those of you on both lists). Alnisa isn't suggesting
everybody drop the 31st. In fact, we in Madison are trying to support
those events. We've had venue problems and Halloween is pretty much
the biggest event in Madison year round, so that date was just poor
for us. We should have fought to push it to a later date. Lesson
learned.

Obviously, those that are having physical events on the 31st can
participate too. We are still working on a physical event on open
access with the local university and I'm confident it will
happen....just not sure when yet. We're also planning a music event,
but again, it won't be on the 31st.

Cheers!

Hi Alnisa and others.

I certainly understand the constraints that others may be feeling with regard to event planning and, therefore, support the idea of conducting an education campaign about openness over the next few weeks. Many of us are already doing this in our daily information push about our open interests via twitter / email / presentations / etc. but using a common mark (be it a hash or a badge) to tie this information together seems to me like a pretty easy way to demonstrate a global interest in the concept of openness and transparency as it relates to what we do. With this in mind, I'd also like to see more reference to the Open Everything Wiki in the blog posts, tweets, and other information we push out.

Tying Open Everything into Open Access Week is also an important point. I think in focusing on planning our own events, we've, perhaps, become too distant from the work of OA folks. In the spirit of collaboration and building awareness and interest, it may be worthwhile approaching those in our area who are hosting and participating in OA events:  http://www.openaccessweek.org/list-of-participants-growing-daily/  or at least become aware of what's going on: http://www.openaccessweek.org/about-the-week/

just some additional thoughts.
