Greetings all,

I'm a owner of an ESX and would love to know how to use this program.
I'm on a MAC with OSX 10.7.2. It would be great if someone could
direct me to a step-by-step guide on how I can upload wave files to my
ESX using this program. Right now I'm trying to get the program to
detect the hardware. Currently I have a Midi-to-USB attached to send
midi out to the ESX, assuming that's how I would send a wave file to
the machine. If anyone could be of some help I would really appreciate
it.

thanks,

m

Mitch-

I haven't created a startup guide (or a how-to) yet. I should
probably add one to the wiki page (https://github.com/skratchdot/open-
electribe-editor/wiki).

Anyways, first off, think of an .esx file as a snapshot of the current
state of your ESX. It contains info about all the patterns, songs,
samples, etc. All "Open Electribe Editor" does, is allow you to
edit .esx files. It doesn't connect directly to the ESX.

To get use out of the program, you will need a smart media card (so
you can copy your .esx files onto the machine). Newer model Electribes
let you use SD cards (instead of SmartMedia).

So, a basic guide is:

1) Open the program.
2) Create a new .esx file.
a) From the menu: "File"->"New .esx File"
b) A dialog box will open. Choose somewhere on your hardrive to save
the new file. Give it a unique name, and click okay.

3) Now a new workspace will open up. You can start adding some samples
to it by dragging-and-dropping audio files from your Mac, onto the
workspace; or by using the main menu: "File"->"Import"->"Import Audio
Files".
4) Once you've added enough files, you can save the .esx file.
- From the menu: "File"->"Save"
5) Now you need to get the .esx file from your Mac onto your actual
Korg ESX.
a) Enter a SmartMedia card (you will probably need to buy a card
reader for your Mac if it doesn't already have one).
b) Copy the .esx file you just created onto the SmartMedia drive that
was mounted
c) Insert the smartMedia card into your Korg Esx:
- Press the global button
- Press Shift+16
- Select "LOAD"
- Select "ALL"
- Choose the .esx file you've just created, and confirm the load.

Now your Esx contents will be overwritten with all the sample data,
etc from the file you just created on your Mac.

Please note, loading an .esx file via "LOAD->ALL" will lose the
current contents on your machine. If you have patterns/songs you don't
want to lose, make sure you do a "SAVE->ALL" first.

Hope that helps some (or at least gives you a better understanding of
the program).

Also, I should have mentioned, that there is currently no way to
connect your ESX to the program via MIDI.

At some point I'd like to look into MIDI dumps (imports/exports), but
I haven't had the time to work on that yet...

That would be so great if you incorporated MIDI function! Please work toward incorporating it as soon as you're able!

I'll keep this in mind... I'm going to try re-working the program early this year, and would like to make it a bit more easy to customize and add features.

Thanks for signing up here!

Sooooooo. You're saying any samples we put on the new .esx file will replace the entirety of the what the machine currently has? Is there any way to just add more sounds?

The only way to do that (using .esx files) is by exporting what's currently on the ESX, then opening that file in the program, adding new samples to it, saving the .esx file from the program, then loading that back into your sampler.

If you want to just add 1 or 2 samples to your ESX, you can just use the instructions from the manual.

This program is for editing .esx files- which are a snapshot of the entire state of the machine: samples, patterns, songs, miscellaneous settings, etc

So to do what your are wanting:

1. Save the state of your ESX into an .esx file, by following the "save all" instructions from your manual.
2. You will now have an .esx file on your smart media card.  Put your smart media card into your computer
3. Run "Open Electribe Editor". Open the .esx file from your smart media card (File->Open).
4. Add a few samples to the file.
5. Save your changes to the smart media card.
6. Put the smart media card back into your electribe
7. Follow the "load all" instructions from your electribe manual.

Hope that helps!
