Hi,

At November's Opening Up Government Data event in DERI, NUI Galway, I
presented an Irish Open Data Timeline. There were some comments that I
missed some dates and events, so I have created a page in the Open
Data workspace to capture the complete story of Irish Open Data. Feel
free to add relevant content to the timeline (or edit what I have
entered) here:
http://workspace.opendata.ie/wiki/Irish_Open_Data_Timeline

Cheers,
Deirdre

Hi Deirdre,

Apologies, I should add this directly to the wiki, but it's late in the day…

It's worth pointing out some of the early activities that predated the current flowering of open data in the country.

kildarestreet.com has been around since 2002 and today would be classified as an open data app.

statcentral.ie has been cataloging statistical data from around the government, in various stages of machine-readability and openness, since at least 2008 (I'm not sure when the site was established)

In the North, http://www.opendatani.info/ was around since I believe 2009, but after building the site they never put in more than 8 or so datasets. The site was discontinued earlier this year.

There were various hack days and other events that could be mentioned, e.g.,
Hacks and Hackers Hack Day in Dublin, 16 Nov 2010 (organized by ScraperWiki)
Open Data Hack Day in Galway, 4 Dec 2010 (organized by 091labs+DERI)
Open Data Hack Day in Galway, 15 Feb 2011 (organized by 091labs+DERI)

Best,
Richard

Cheers Richard, I've added these (though I think you're missing the
point of a collaborative wiki :P)

I've left a question mark on some of the early items, if anyone wants
to confirm the details.

KildareStreet started on April 14, 2009 - though it's dataset goes back to 2004 which I think may be the confusing factor! :)

Ah, I just saw the phrase “going back to 2004” and jumped to conclusions. Thanks for clearing that up Gavin!

Hi All
How pure do you want the definition of Open Data and the origins?

In 2004 the County Development Board set a terms of reference for a
steering group to work with Tekenable Consultants on this report which
should be read by all who are interested in this area:
http://www.fdb.ie/fingaldatahub/report_Co_Data_Initiative.pdf This
report challenged the prevailing "don't share, ..data protection"
conflation in many organisations at that time. It also tackled issues
like why low level ED data was not being routinely shared or
published. The report set out a framework for how data could be
aggregated and legally shared between (a) organisations and (b) with
the public.

In 2006-7 a group of state agencies came together under the banner of
Fingal Data Hub which had many similar objectives to Open Data.
Foremost among these was publishing "administrative data", which needs
to be understood completely differently to "official
statistics" [which is that data which must be published], so data that
relates to services, their locations and their uptake by local
populations. This was supplemented with download services in simple
machine readable formats, and no conditions being set except that the
data managers in each organisation reserved the right to have final
interpretation this data.

The portal www.fdb.ie/fingaldatahub portal was launched on the 24th
April 2009 and the main focus was put on populating the hub with more
and more data until it reached 60 datasets this year.

Some of the work here may have been accidentally Open Data, but on the
other hand it was also felt that so many people in Fingal needed it
for so many different purposes that the usual controls could not
apply. I would like to advance it to you as an influential project
that had interest from the Department, EUROGI, academic institutions
and several local authorities as well as businesses and citizens
around Fingal.
