OKFN is organising two events next week as part of a new workstream called Frontiers of Openness (see below for details). These topics are not often covered by our community, but they are much more closely related to open data than we would like.  This is our attempt to bridge the conversation gap and advocate for openness in fields that are not receiving much attention.

The Tech We Want for Our Brain Commons

The event will bring together researchers, technologists, policymakers, journalists and civil society to discuss how openness can help shape the future of brain-computer interfaces and our shared brain commons. Rather than focusing on new rights or regulation, the conversation will explore how transparency, interoperability and user agency can help ensure these technologies evolve in ways that strengthen open societies.

SkyCommons Observatory - Project Launch

A new platform and a groundbreaking study about the current state of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, carried out by researchers in six countries. While these services provide vital lifelines, they also introduce systemic risks. These include the potential for market lock-in, data flow opacity, and a “single point of failure” risk where a nation’s critical infrastructure is subject to the political or personal interests of foreign actors.

The launch is followed by a roundtable featuring experts in digital policy, telecommunications infrastructure, and geopolitics.
