Hello, Open Data Day community,

I hope you're all doing well!

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Lucas Pretti, Director of Communications and Advocacy at the Open Knowledge Foundation, and on our side I'm responsible for convening Open Data Day.

I'm writing today to kick start the organisation of the 2025 edition, with the aim of making it the biggest, most diverse and widespread ODD ever.

Four months to go!

For those of you who have recently joined the community, welcome! Open Data Day is a decentralised event, with hundreds of people organising events to celebrate open data in their cities/countries. OKFN and our Network are usually responsible for the overall infrastructure (website, calls, communication, partnerships), community management and conceptual/thematic direction.

This year we are providing an additional resource: the regional coordinators of the Open Knowledge Network will be the contact points for event proposals from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. You can meet them here, but I'll introduce them in more detail in another email.

The most important thing is that the ODD really does happen with the help of each and every one of you!

To kick things off, we propose two actions.

The first is a consultation with the community – you! There are a few questions in this form to help us understand your appetite for ODD 25 and your general alignment with the theme and dates. It will take no more than 2 minutes! Please respond using this link. (The consultation will be open until next Sunday, 17 November).

The second is a public webinar to launch Open Data Day 2025. We'll share the theme and dates, and invite some people who have organised events in previous years to share their stories. On the day of the webinar, we'll open registration for events and show the updated website. (The webinar will be held on 28 November at 13:00 UTC. Please register here.)

Remember, this is an open list. Just write to open-d...@googlegroups.com and your message will reach all members.

That's it for today. If you have any questions, just ask and we'll follow the thread.

See you soon!

Hello again!

Thank you to everyone who responded to the consultation - we're delighted with the level of engagement and motivation to take part in Open Data Day 2025.

In general, 94% of respondents agree with the chosen dates (1-7 March). And 87% have no objection to the proposed theme (Open Data to Tackle the Polycrisis), although we acknowledge the valuable comments and collaborative spirit of those who felt that polycrisis might be too academic or generic a word.

Let's remember that this theme is for orientation only. As ODD is an open and decentralised event, proponents are free to organise events with any focus, as long as they are celebrations of open data.

I will be sending a separate email to the 27 people who have volunteered to be part of the organising committee. Stay tuned.

And as a reminder, next Thursday, 28 November, is the ODD 25 Kick-off Webinar. Sign up here and spread the word in your networks by sharing the following posts on Mastodon, BlueSky, X and LinkedIn.

See you soon,
