Folks,
We want to use the OCD ID conventions to connect people with their local civic entities, e.g. libraries, parks and rec, police, etc. and was wondering whether there are standard naming conventions for various municipal departments the we can/should use, or do we need to create our own?
THanks!
Kev

ocd-ids are primarily meant to identify unique political geographies and not departments or anything non-geography related. That being said, nothing stops you from going one level down on your own platform for adding to, e.g. ocd-division/country:us/state:fl/place:miami/department:police – but you won’t find any standard naming conventions for that.

Thanks! That’s what I thought, but much appreciate the confirmation.

To get a recent list of government entities in the US, I recommend looking here:  https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/gus/data/publicusefiles.html

Hi Kev,

Division IDs get the prefix ocd-division. What you're describing are not divisions, but organizations. For that, the prefix is ocd-organization.

Anyone can mint ocd-organization IDs. Not everyone should be minting ocd-division IDs.

fwiw seems like a great place to converge ocd with schema.org.
schema has most, if not all, of these types of organizations baked in.

that said, not sure how you would get an id from schema, i dont think its possible.

but schema still has some taxonomy that can be used or built atop to get what you want.

Thanks to both of you! Great feedback.  I’ll have to spend some more time looking at schema.org.

OCD is based on Popolo, which reuses Schema.org, its antecedents, and other ontologies where Schema.org didn't have coverage.

So, the convergence in terms of modelling has already been done, by design.

(Schema.org has no opinion on IDs.)
